I am new on this site. I have been following VJ and reading on a lot of topics here for a while. I really like this site and feel it is very trusted....I would like to share my experience and will also like to post other topics too. first, I would like to share my experience when I attended my B2 visa interview at the US embassy in Ghana..of which I was denied. My first advice is don't allow any so called "agent" or any other person fill out your application for you....I will advise you to do it yourself or let the one inviting you help you, even a trusted person is good. Make sure you are present when filling it out. I allowed someone to do it for me and there were mistakes on it, I realized there was nothing I could do about it and honestly, my wife told me not to go in for the interview. I was single when I filled it out and since had gotten married. At the time I completed the application (had it done for me) the intent was to attend a birthday , I was soo new to this visa thing...so my appointment time was 7:30 am, I went there early in the morning around 7:00...showed my appointment letter and went in. I met the guy at the front gate who took my letter and showed me where to sit and where to go. I went to the window number 7 for fingerprinting then a lady asked me to sit down. She was a Ghanaian lady and she wasn't very nice. I stat down and I did not know where to go after that. A guy I met there was very nice to me and it was his first time too. They had a line so I joined a few others who were there before me. The embassy staff were not ready so the man I met were in line with four others ahead of me they were approved. when I got to my turn here is how it went:

Why are you going to the united states .? for a visit

then she stated oh you are a student.? note ....because when she scanned my passport it appeared that i am a student but honestly i completed in 2013 did my passport while i was attending extra classes so i put student on my passport application completed the classes with the intend of going to college but i wasn't in college yet when i applied for the visa .i had been managing a family business since 2013 so i put in business on my visa application and passport says student  (first red flag)..

second question who is inviting you?

third question have you travel before or been outside Ghana .? nope then she asked again ...

then she told me shes very sorry in a very polite away shes very sorry and she cant give me a visa and she is going to give me a letter which is going to explain why she cant give me the visa and i can try again then she gave me 214(b) .

it was a very short interview ...was a little happy and sad later when i got home with my wife ..but it was a good experience i will like to share

The CO saw through this very feeble attempt to fool our consular officers....this interview might have lasted 8 seconds....a no brainer....you are not really more clever than even the newest of COs...especially in a country in which the overstay and fraud rate is sky high....the newest COs have spent hours being prepared for these silly stories....while you did not spend hardly a minute...

I would have asked for:

(a) all of your student transcripts [grades] for the last X years

(b) tax returns for your 'business'

© asked for more detail on who you were allegedly visiting and why

you would have been able to offer me virtually nothing tangible...so...denied...but understand, I already knew what was going on long before you even arrived at the window...because this sort of 'scheme' has been tried thousands of times in developing countries....

Bottom line: you are not going to outwit the COs...

My first reaction was to post for others to learn .and for your information I had all my school transcripts and all business documentations were ready in hand to present and all legitimate..and would like you to know not everyone is out to commit fraud .the reason for going was legitimate with an intent to return

I have been through the process, refused. You mention you were a Student but could not complete a B2 application? You needed help?

My recollection is that there was not much to it.

yes i am a student and yes i can fill out the B2 application ..but that was my first experience.... i had no idea on how and where to even get the forms and a friend introduce me to someone who claim to work with the embassy he then ask me of my information and he fill out the form .later gave me a letter with interview date and my information ..that's how i realized you shouldn't let anyone fill out your form for you and it was even on written there ...so this the mean reason why am posting this to advise anyone to repeat such mistakes

Too many assumptions are being made by you and I surely hope the CO was acting in good faith and not like you are describing. Oh, one more thing, all documents were in hand and all are legitimate, so your only denial would have to be based on bias and discrimination. Isn't that against US law? ..can tell from how you even talk hate foreigner sky high and to be precise developing countries ...check your family tree your a foreigner

Certainly must have been the situation in my case, quite why they do not like the Welsh I do not know, most Americans do not even know where Wales is.

The classic response to a denial..'bias, discrimination..'...no, the real reason is that you tried to make it appear as though you were a student and/or some sort of 'businessman' at the same time...and no doubt, the CO had already done a simple background check, knew you weren't a student and possibly your 'business' is mostly on paper you printed at home...and no one travels thousands of miles, spends thousands of dollars (they don't have) to help someone blow out candles at a birthday party...that makes NO sense whatsoever. None. Zero. My guess is that you were hoping to work in the US, to augment whatever 'earnings' your 'business' lacks....how many employees in this 'business?'....what does this 'business' produce or make or ??? If this 'family business' has a telephone, is it a cell phone or a land line? My guess is that someone called this 'business' and talked to no one....why is it so important that you spend money you don't have to attend a birthday party thousands of miles away? Who does that?

As far as checking my family tree, none are from Ghana....I have, during my career as a CO, interviewed thousands of people just like you...people with a story, some questionable documents (we have only your word that said papers are legit) and changing stories....all of this adds up to a denial, regardless of your heritage.

I cannot tell you how many denied applicants threatened to sue me, claiming bias....oddly, none ever did, and none would have succeeded...because my decisions were based on my observations during the interview, and if the applicant did not convince me of their reasons for returning, then according to US law, I was supposed to deny their application...which I did.

Sometimes, a week later, the same applicant returned, now waving one of those 'legit' papers, proclaiming that the applicant was now the president of some company and 'had to attend company meetings' in the US....sure. Happens all of the time, especially in developing countries...people get rapid promotions overnight....

Bottom line: the CO instantly saw through whatever you were trying to accomplish...and properly denied your application. And, another one will do the same....because going all the way to the US for someone else's birthday makes no sense in a country whose average annual income is measured in the hundreds of dollars.

So what is the problem being Welsh?

Dear HFM181818. Here is where you are way off the mark. The birthday party is and was important to me. Yes, I am the US Citizen. Yes, the business is legit has been since 1960. Yes, i have been to Ghana multiple times. I too am in a positon where i work with "suspect" individuals. I do my job and due diligence. See, my mother battled cancer for two years and died. I wanted him with me to celebrate life. No one was claiming discrimination in the post, there are many forms of bias. Quite frankly I think you covered them all. No one said they were suing you, quite frankly who cares. Yes, you the CO was doing your job upholding the US law with the presumption all applicants are applying with the intent to imigrate. The burden is on the applicant to prove otherwise. However, you, the CO are to review the information and yes your observations are key as mine are I my work. When there is no true due diligence and you are painting all applicants with the same brush you are not following your policy and regulations. Begs me to wonder why we are operating embassies?. You are not saving the world here and unfortunately became a bitter judgmental person from the work you do. For that I truly am sorry for you. The comment of you as a foreigner, well we all know America is a melting pot, no one claimed you have Ghana in your family tree. I bet there are other countries though :) take good care and for proving that not all are as they seem and sometimes making statements without all the facts or your failure to ask questions leads you down the wrong path. I am smiling at all the wrong presumptions you made, work, business accusations especially the comment about who goes to a birthday party thousands of miles away? Guess what!? we do, I do, my kids do :) and enjoy a visit for a few weeks. Life is good! Have a wonderful evening.

And this is now the wife (USC) of the denied B2 applicant? Better make your own account on VJ so we don't have to guess who's writing when.

There is a USC wife?

Funny that was not mentioned in the original post? Highly material.

I would assume that if the B2 applicant that was denied had a 'USC Wife' that would be an automatic denial????? Am I missing something here? I am from Africa too....and I know the schemes too...most of them want to come to the USA.
