I went through an internal Mexican immigration check, on a bus between Mexico and Oaxaca. They do NOT mess around, quite instructive.

What they check for? I went to a cruise to Ensenada and they didn't ask me anything.

While many will weep and claim to be sympathetic, none of that matters as far as the OP ever getting a tourist visa....everyone who applies for a B2 visa must convince a CO that they will LEAVE the USA after a visit of appropriate duration....that is what the laws states...there is nothing in the law about awarding a visa to someone who may (or may not) have some overwhelming need (or desire) to go to the US....because our border controls once an alien has been admitted are essentially non-existent, COs want to be 101% certain that the applicant will abide by the terms of the visa about to be granted...any doubts are resolved against the applicant, again, according to US law.

Now, if our dysfunctional Congress had legislated some real, enforceable controls over visitors (such as not granting extensions like candy, disallowing all forms of AOS, and making people inadmissible if they overstay by as little as 1 day), then perhaps more people might be given an object of trust....but trust does not come easy...and while many applicants want the COs to be sympathetic, the fact remains that any CO who issues a visa based on sympathy should have their consular commission taken away....there is just no upside to doing such a thing in today's lack of control environment.

Now, if someone could be admitted for, say, 30 days, and if that person did not depart the country, was then rendered PERMANENTLY INELIGIBLE to receive any type of visa in the future for the rest of that person's life, then perhaps more responsible people might be given at least a one shot opportunity to visit my country.....but today, that is not the current state of affairs....thus, any applicant must overcome 214b before being given a visa, no matter what the reason(s) they offer for traveling TO the US.
