N400 form Part 11 question 5 confined to mental institution: behavioral health

This is for my boyfriend: he is completing the form - if someone checked into a mental health facility at a hospital for a voluntary commitment for depression for a weekend 13 years ago, would nondisclosure of it impact the application?

I don't believe the N-400 asks any questions about voluntary admittance regarding mental health. Only being committed. Please post the specific line item you are looking at. Legally speaking voluntary/involuntary are two very different things.
So verify the exact question, and verify EXACTLY what happened to your boyfriend. Even if involuntary, it will not serve as a bar to citizenship (as you have described so far). Never lie on an N-400.

No. The question asks about "Have you ever been declared legally incompetent, or been confined to a mental institution", "confined" means that a judge ordered the person to be placed in the mental institution. Your boyfriend was treated voluntarily.
