Getting SSN after EAD

I received my EAD last week and I am going to get my SSN today with my husband. I know it takes up to 2 weeks to get the actual card, but do they give me a paper with the social security number? the reason why I am asking is because I would like to go to the DMV and have my driver's license transferred to an American one. Just don't want to waste time because I know it's going to take time to get that one as well.

Thanks!

No, they just give you a paper saying you applied for one, you won't know you ssn until you get the card in the mail.

I just went to the Social Security office and the lady took my form. She told me that the info I gave her needs to be verified by homeland security first and can take up to 30 days! Really? Is this true or is it just something they say, and should expect to receive within 2 weeks or less?

Within 1 month of my wife's arrival, we went to the SSA office to get her a SSN. There was a government website that she logged into to check my wife's status. It took her about 5 minutes to verify her status in the US. Then about another 5 minutes or so, she signed a document and was told to wait for the card within 30 days. We got it in about a week or so. If you went to the SSA with your EAD, not sure what other proof they'll need besides that. I hope they meant to say to expect the card within 30 days.

Did she get her SSN before marriage? I wanted to do it after because we didn't want to go there twice to change my name on the card. I know many recommend doing it before, but this was our decision because he is really busy at work. My name is different from I-94 and my passport because I added my husband's last name. That's probably why she needs to verify with Homeland Security.... or maybe she just wasn't clear and should have said to expect the card within 30 days. who knows.

Since the SSA office is literally about 15 minutes away from us, we got her SSN before the marriage. I was able to file Married Filing Jointly on our tax return since she had SSN and she was able to get some credit card. We are going back later when she gets her EAD to update married name and the restriction removed from her card.

Yes, that's true... Sometimes it takes 5 minutes to verify you documents with the issuing office which is DHS, but sometimes - up to 5 weeks. It depends on DHS, how accurate they were with updating your status after EAD card was issued.

As soon as SS Office sees updates in their system, they will mail your card to you.
