Each state differs.

My friend went to the DMV with a foreign license & was able to get a new license issued to him in California while the same friend with the same paperwork was denied even a temporary license in Texas just 2 months later when he was told he had to get a new state drives license when he moved.

Washington state has no issues whatsoever. 6 years for everyone even the undocumented. Have had just 2 in the space of 11 years.

Hold your hat...these will be changing. Washington State is out of compliance and will have to change to the new rules of the Real ID Law

Lol, you're right about the Real ID act compliance requirement though. The states's extension got denied last month as well. There's still hope for the undocumented, as there will be a 2 tier ID one with federal restrictions and the other without it. I guess those with federal restrictions will just drive cross country rather than flying, so it's still a win win for them just an inconvenience.

Yep, Tennessee will make us get a new DL when my husband's 10-year card is approved. Another trip to the ever-fascinating and entertaining DMV office!

I notice that you and others show a POE date, even where you have been to USA previously.

What is the purpose of this?

Are you just showing that you successfully re-entered the USA on an EAD/AP Card, a Green Card or what?

Just curious.

I got my DL in California for one year with my EAD/AP march. Funny thing, I got my EAD in january, driver's test in February and road skills in march, but I got my green card in february. I had to make appointments for each time because this year California started to issue DL to anyone that can not present proof of legal presence in the US, but can present evidence of residence and identification documents in the state of California.

Then I moved to Minnesota and I had to take the knowledge test again!!! but this time I used the GC and I was given a 4 year DL. Then my spouse was offered a job in Chicago, and I thought I was going to take another test again! the job was no accepted *phew*

The DL issues vary by state, and even by DMVs. When I showed the EAD card in a Wisconsin DMV, they said the EAD is not acceptable to issue me a learner's permit. I was eventually issued the permit with my conditional green card.

Last month when I applied for my probationary driver's license, my conditional green card was set to expire in 4 months and I expected to be issued a DL for only four months. Lo and behold! I was issued a probationary DL with a normal expiry date, valid much longer than my current conditional green card. Go figure!

That's strange, in the Wisconsin's DMV website it says that the Employment Authorization Card is an accepted document to get a drivers license, and I know this because we were supposed to move to Wisconsin this year and I was checking about the website for the documents I would need there to get the DL, eventually we moved to Minnesota instead.

His previous visits were VWP visits.

After we married, I stayed here and we began the I-130; he had to go back for business and to sell our house there. POE was after his interview (in Holland) and after he received his entry visa. I don't put the entire play-by-play timeline because it's just too long.

Make sense now?

She just ended up going back to Bulgaria to get her license there. In many states (many, not all), if you have a foreign driver's license, you need only take the written test to get a standard one. This was the case for Ohio, where I was before the UK. At first I thought one issued during a two year GC would expire after two years; nope, it was a standard. Pennsylvania must micromanage terribly. :P

Man this thread got me so depressed. Didn't realize this would need to get renewed so much, in person. Ugh. The DMV can be a special kinda hell.

You can thank the terrorists for this hell.

My EAD encounter was in 2013. Maybe the rule with EAD changed since then. More than likely though, I was unlucky to do business with an employee who didn't know what she was doing. She had after all made me wait an hour because she was waiting to get an e-mail her boss whether my EAD was acceptable. About an hour later she got an e-mail that it was not.

My husbands EAD was accepted in WI in 2014 as proof.

I understand that when ROC documents submitted, a one year extension letter regarding the 2 year Green Card is issued by USCIS.

My question is: How many here have successfully gotten an extension of an expiring DL based on this one year extension?

My guess is that DMV people will likely go into lock-down mode when they look at the letter, because they have no idea what it is all about.

I know it varies by state, and will even vary between DMV offices within the same state . . . but still, what have your experiences been?

With my exprience with them, i dont think they would renew ur license based on that letter, they usually go by that CARD, so they can document all the information, numbers on the card, so my best guess would be to wait till you get your new card...and again like you said it MIGHT varies by state.

I see there are people who went to Massachusetts in this thread - how was your experience getting your Driver´s Licence?

My POE is later this week and I am kind of hoping to get a licence sooner than a GC lol What are my chances?

You need a SSN and proof that you are a Massachusetts resident and proof of your immigration status. I'm not sure how it works with a K1. I used my Green card as proof when I applied. You have to pass the written test to get your permit then take the road test. Good luck.
