Round trip ticket - risky?

Hi,

I had my visa approved the other day (yay!) and while I'm waiting for my passport to arrive I've been looking at flight tickets. Round trip tickets are a lot cheaper than one way tickets and I was wondering if it would cause any problems at the border if I were to buy a round trip ticket to the us without returning since I'd be staying in the us on my K1 visa.

Why would it be risky?

It usually cheaper to purchase round trip versus one way

Since when? With the cost of jet fuel dropping from $2.85 (avg.) per gallon in 2014 to $1.98 this year, the cost of filling one-way seats has dropped. A quick persual of airfares indicates that one-way tickets from Europe and Asia to USA are significantly cheaper than roundtrip. However, because of security concerns, one-way tickets are often red-flagged. Nevertheless, a K-1 visa is a 90-day marry-or-leave contract with the U.S. government. You may need the roundtrip portion of your ticket. Some people change their minds - and nothing wrong with that.

I just came here in the US on a one-way ticket. The POE wouldn't ask for your round trip ticket so that should be okay however my concern is your country of origin. Immigration might ask you why you got a return ticket when you intend to stay in the US for good. But still you can explain it to them though.

I don't see this being an issue; usually it's the other way around (requiring a round-trip in order to prove your intent to leave, obviously not applicable here). It's common knowledge that round-trips are, for the most part, cheaper than one-way fares :) You should be good to go!

Be prepared for the eternal waiting game. Be prepared for average news.

Since I have been flying and booking flight internationally, I would say about 10 years that I am aware of......

I recently cancelled my roundtrip ticket without any hassle. When I came through Atlanta at POE the officer didn't even ask if I had a roundtrip or one way. Plus when I was booking my tickets the roundtrip was half the price of a one way ticket, so definitely worth buying just be sure to call and cancel the return :)
