My wife just got her green card in the mail. She already has a social security card. Do we need to change any thing with the SS card now that she is a resident? She came here on a K1, thats when we got her SS card.

Thanks

Since your wife is a LPR, she is eligible for the unrestricted card. I suggest to update her status with the SSA at least. Having an unrestricted card will cause less hassles, since a lot of people don't understand that the restriction is only there to keep you from using the card as a work authorization document. They think it's a temporary number or that you are only here temporally. And havinng the wording removed. it will be considered an unrestricted card therefore no Work authorization needed. This confuses some HR people :)

Also, you want to let them know you are now a LPR in case something happens to you (Social security benefits payable on death to your family members, etc). Sorry to be morbid, but lifetime limits, eligibility, etc, are effected by this (and probably other things). Once you are USC, you also want to go let the SS office know, as you are eligible for more than a LPR.

So, I would update it anyway.. Actually, I'm going to do this today :)

Good luck!!!

I assume yr wife has her SS Card under her maiden name? you can go back to ss office and have it change to married name, just bring her gc, but the restriction will still be there 'valid for work with DHS authorization'. If her gc is under here married name, her ss card has to have the same name. Theres nothing to worry about the restriction printed on it though, she can show her gc once she is offered a job, the employer will ask for it anyway, her gc is her authorization.

My ss card has the restriction printed on it and i didn't encounter any problem.

Not quite. If you have a green card and go to the SSA to update your status, the restriction and stipulation printed on the SS card is removed. That is only printed on the SS card before becoming a permanent resident green card holder. Being a permanent resident allows you to work legally in the US. You no longer need work authorization(EAD), and they will remove that wording from the SS card once you let them know you have a green card.

Just came back from SS Office :) It took 20 minutes, for both - my son and me. No issues at all, and they knew exactly what they were doing.. Unrestricted cards should arrive at the end of this week :)

If you decide to update your wife's ss card, she should have copy of current ss card, green card and driver license.

ah okay. i got it. when i went to ss office i showed my ead, thats why my ss card still has restrictions on it.

I got confused with ead and gc.

But i still did okay with my employer, didnt encounter any problem with it.

If you took your green card to the SSA to have your status updated with them to permanent resident, then they should have mailed you a new card without that printed on it.

Edit> Just saw your second reply. Yes, with the EAD it will still have that stipulation on it. You cannot get it removed until you are a lawful permanent resident and have a green card.
