Talking about your wad of cash in public/on VJ

I've noticed a lot of people talking about their money, listing their salaries, mentioning how hard they've worked to make X, and other specific mentions of their income or assets.

My parents always said, "the more money you have the less you should talk about it." But that is a Jewish attitude, AFAIK.

I voted it's best discussed euphemistically. I was always taught that any mention of numbers is a no no.

Why are there so many mentions of numbers on VJ lately? Seems weird.

And isn't it considered at all tacky to insinuate that you make more than a previously stated number, or to complain about having your taxes, or anything like that?

No numbers for me either, that's TMI. I have also noticed people being very specific with numbers here lately and how much $ they make and that was a surprise for me. For me is not taboo but it's not public info either.

The ones ive notice are some that state the numbers in getting a answer for the sponsoring part they tell all looking for some kind of a reply i think.

Oh, another thing I've seen is "money is not a problem for me" when people talk about the cost of some of the aspects of this process.Even if money is not a problem for you, just stating that it isn't seems a bit uncouth. Why not say "I think I will be able to afford it" or something a little less....abrasively boasting? :shrug:

I actually think that discussing money and stuff over a forum with strangers is probably better than discussing it with people you actually know, but that's just me. I voted for "I'm broke" because that's the case for me, and I really don't care who knows LOL!

My father taught me that it's nobody else's business how much money you make. He would never even let me know how much he was making, imagine talking about it with friends or worse, strange people.

One of the first questions an american will ask is what do you do? I think we mean it in a fairly innoculous way- a sincere interest in what people do for a living, but much of the world sees it as vulgar and rude. I think many here lately are using speific money issues here to promote themselves. There are people here with money who have no need to talk about it.

I still think money/salaries are something that should be kept between family and close friends though.
