Hello everyone,

My husband (U.S. citizen) and I (I received my green card 1.5 months ago) plan on travelling to Vietnam for a month to visit my family. We will probably transit in Seoul. My green card is in my married name, however, my passport still has my maiden name. I emailed the Vietnam embassy in the U.S. in order to renew my passport and the embassy said to call them. I tried to call the Vietnam Embassy several times this week in order to renew my passport but couldn't reach them for some reason. We plan on leaving in December.

My question is: Is it possible for me to travel outside and back into the U.S. with my green card in married name and passport in maiden name? If so, how should I book the ticket? Did anyone has experience with this before?

Thank you so much for your help.

You should be fine as long add you have a copy of you're marriage certificate with you to show the name change.

In Vietnam they won't care able your card as long add you have your passport. In the US you still need card, passport and marriage certificate.

Hi there, do you know someone who has been in this situation? What's about the plane tickets? Do I book them according to the maiden name in my passport?

It's advisable to have the name on the plane tickets match the name on the passport. In fact, she may not be allowed to board the plane if the names don't match. There are many posts here on VJ about exactly that situation.

When re-entering the US, it's fine to have the married name on the green card and the maiden name in the passport, as long as she has a copy of her marriage certificate as proof of the change of name. Here's official confirmation of that on the CBP website.

Eighteen years in the US and I still don't understand Velveeta, TV ads for prescription drugs, only getting 2 weeks paid vacation, or why anyone believes anything they see on Fox "News".

Thank you so much. I feel much better after seeing the answer on the CBP website.

I apologize for not answering quick, But I second Elf's answer. Book the ticket in your passport name and when you come to the US show a copy of the marriage certificate to clear up the name difference.

Good luck.
