Dude... go to the USA. You have a rare opportunity to go abroad and be with your family. You can always marry her and petition her over to the States. Someone who loves you would support your dreams and ambitions. If she loves you, she will follow you.

Thank you all for your comments.

I arrived in NY November 13th and after 4 weeks I received my GC in the adress I had specified.

Then, after about a week I went to the Jamaica SSN office and filled the application for a SSN registration.

I received my SSN on the same week and now my next steps are to apply for a drivers licence and open a bank account to be able to fill an application for a credit card.

Still, I cannot get used to this city and the frenetic way of life that people live.

One thing I wasn't expecting to see is how much dirty some areas are outside of Manhattan, especially the train stations are the most depressing thing I have ever seen in my life.

I don't understand how the supposed "best city in the world" has so many dirty streets and outdated and unattractive train stations.

Anyways, I am temporarily working as an electrician assistant and earn some decent money while I am searching for a job as a graphic designer which I find it will be very difficult to find one as the marketplace in NY is highly demanding.

As things are now, I am probably staying for good as I don't have any better alternative.

*P.S. I am seeing a girl from a greek-american family and had dinner a couple of times in her house, but I am not ready yet to step into a new relationship cause I am still in touch with my gf in Greece through phone since I arrived in NYC...

Opa, the train stations are the most depressing thing you've seen in your life? Seriously? Have you considered that the country that opened it's borders to you and offered you a home perhaps has a dated transport system because it was well ahead of it's time. London opened the underground in 1890 and NYC in 1904. I don't think Athens had a subway system in place then - so perhaps a little less judgement on your part may hold you in good stead. Besides, the US is vast - if New York isn't your cup of tea, move to a place you like more.

Yeah, I know it sounds like nitpicking but I'm just being honest and just stating my personal feelings.

I know the transport system is really old, but that doesn't mean it cannot be updated and become more attractive.

And it is possible financially, if the US decides to cut some of the fundings on the military where most of the taxes go.

I haven't been in the London subway but after a google search I did, it seems way cleaner and more modern than NYC, even though they 're both very old.

Well its a bit hard to move to another city as all of my family members are in NYC and I currently work here.

I hope in the future I get the chance to move to a less crowded and more attractive place.

Ok Alex, you have a bit to learn about who funds what. Cutting military expenditure ain't gonna release any funds for a metropolitan subway. Tell ya what, take a trip to DC and have a look at the metro system there. Or different perspective - take a look around you at a city that is dynamic, has vibrant financial and business sectors, is adding jobs, has rising property prices, and doesn't have queues of thousands of people at soup kitchens. The US is indeed vast and heterogeneous, and many people have already told you that if NY isn't to your liking there are plenty of places that probably will be. But you'll find what you're looking for, good or bad. If you choose to focus on the negative, then that's what you'll see, no matter where you go.

Good luck, I hope 2016 brings you happiness.

That's actually a good point, aimed at someone who's lived through a depression in a country whose GDP has plunged, a country that has been through countless violent protests, stories of people losing just about everything they have through no fault of their own, etc... But yeah, a dirty train station is worse.

Yeah, you 're right. It is a matter of perspective, I'm just a person who prefers more living in a quiet and clean city with not much going on, instead of living in a frenetic and partying lifestyle that big cities like NYC are offering.

Thank you. I wish you too the best for 2016.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Well, I was exaggerating a bit for sure, I was just talking from a practical aesthetics point of view.

As a graphic designer I pay a lot of attention on everyday stuff and how it is designed and if it is attractive enough to the human eye and how it affects psychology.

That's all.

New York State is pretty big and there are loads of quieter suburbs outside the city. Even Connecticut and New Jersey are pretty close as alternative, cleaner, quieter states that will still allow you to be closer to your family. And Long Island is great from what I remember. You'll make it - the start is always hard. Once you're driving and aren't restricted in that sense I think you'll come to enjoy it a lot more. All the big cities here have a hectic pace of life - you wouldn't find Chicago or LA to be any less frenetic :)

Xronia Polla and all the best for the New Year!

Agree with Nickandangi, I know Queens very well as I have close relatives there but we also have relatives out on long island and it is *completely* different. A large number of small quiet towns and some of them feel pretty rural. There's even a real Hicksville out there :D
