Is he a good co-sponsor?

I just graduated from college and an unemployed, although I have several job leads. I'm sure I will have a job by the time my fiance goes for his interview, but I want a co-sponsor just to be on the safe side. I'm thinking of asking my brother. He is a grad student at MIT on fellowships that pay the cost of tuition and somewhere around $30,000 a year. The money lasts five years, and he's had it for two years. So technically, his employment is temporary. Is this okay for a co-sponsor? He's very employable and he has no dependents.

Thanks for your opinions!

Congrats on finding someone so special and getting the courage to go through all of this with. My situation isn't too dissimilar from yours, so I hope you will be fine. I'm a grad student like your brother with the $30k fellowship, but at Michigan, not MIT, and in year 5, not 2. So I'm currently employed but will not be at the end of this academic year, though I'm looking for a job. I should think he would be a fine co-sponsor.

If you're filing for a K1 visa, you don't need to send the I-134 Affidavit of Support until before the interview, not as part of the application process, so you'll have a short period of time to get your own job situation worked out.

My guess is that you're more worried about your financial situation than the government will be, as long as you can find a job that will pay you enough to keep you above the poverty line. Don't sweat it, and enjoy the rest of your time in Tanzania. I really miss East Africa!

I think it's all good now. Jacinta picked up her packets from the embassy this morning, so I think we're in pretty good shape now. One thing you might want to do a bit early is apply for a passport and the police certificate. We got the police certificate after about a month, but the passport took well over two months when it should have taken no more than six weeks. Of course we're dealing with different countries here, but I'm guessing that they work fairly similarly.

Mambo vipi...my fiance received his passport from Tz in about a week and a half, he applied for it right around the time I sent the k-1 ap. That was in Arusha. (there is less curruption and beauracracy in TZ and Arusha esp) Good to start the process early but not to worry. As for the police certificate, Im not sure how long it takes but I heard the police station must mail it directly to the embassy so you have to wait until u get the packet from the embassy. best of luck and safari njema!

I don't have any great advice about who would be a great co-sponsor. I'm in a very similar situation. I graduate from college in May, and should have a job shortly after that. I'm planning on having my parents co-sponsor, but am not exactly sure how that works. But good luck with everything! I'm excited to make some East Africa connections on VJ :D

6/1/06 Met in Rwanda

11/21/06 My parents came to visit and we're officially engaged

11/30/06 Returned to USA

1/26/07 I129f Sent

1/29/07 NAO1

5/1/07 Touched!

5/2/07 Touched again

5/16/07 Learn from my senator's office that petition was approved two weeks ago. NVC says case was received 5/14 and should be sent to the embassy today.
