Actually I get the comparison. Politicians spend more time trying to regulate AR15s than any other firearm out there.

The comparison is flawed at best. The comparison is being made between a subset of firearms (that just so happens to be the subset that causes the fewest deaths) and the entire total of all knife deaths. For this to be a fair comparison and you wanted to use rifles as a subject, you would need to compare the amount of deaths by rifles to the amount of deaths by the type of knives that cause the fewest deaths, which would probably be butter knives.
