Apostille in Virginia (DC area)

Hi. So I wanted to change my passport name to my married name and I need that apostille document (notarization of my marriage certificate I think?). Does anyone knows how that goes, where do I go and should I bring something else? I live in Maryland but got married in Arlington Virginia.

I live in Maryland as well and had to complete one for my wifes country as well. You would get this through the Office of the Secretary of State and you will need a Certified Copy of your Marriage Certificate as well as the cover letter form I provided below for you. Anymore questions let me know

I am pretty positive that as long as it is a certified copy with the court's seal on it then it can be done by Maryland as they verify with the Court you got married in. But just to be sure you should contact them with the number they list on the page and just ask

I think you have to get an apostille from the state in which a document was issued, in which case you'd need to go through the Office Of The Virginia Secretary Of The Commonwealth for a Virginia marriage certificate.

Luckily that won't mean you have to take a trip to Richmond, because Virginia has a mail-in option for certification. Full details are on their website. The fee is $10 per apostille payable to the "Secretary of the Commonwealth" and they estimate a 5-business-day processing time for mail-in orders, or same-day counter service if you really want to take that drive down to Richmond.
