So I went to try and apply for health insurance and the online form asked for my SSN. I just got here on a spouse visa 2 weeks ago and so don't have one.

I can't quite remember if I requested one during the application process so I called up the SS offices. Long wait and a VERY confusing conversation where a dozen form numbers were thrown at me before they suggested I call USCIS.

I call USCIS who tell me they can't do jack and that I need to call SS offices.

Very lost, the forums are my only hope now.

Even if you elected to have a social security number designated for you when you completed the immigrant visa paperwork you only have about a 50-50 shot of actually receiving it.

Go to your nearest Social Security Agency office and enquire as to the status of your application. Or just apply for a new number whilst you're there. Either way, you can do nothing by phone, either with USCIS or the SSA. Visit the SSA in-person.

When you go, take your British passport (containing your endorsed immigrant visa), a completed SS-5 application, and a certified copy of your birth certificate.

Thanks for the tip. Would I definitely need the birth certificate? Just wondering if I sent my only copy in with my visa application. I have a marriage certificate if that's as good?

And I don't make an appointment when I go, right? Just turn up?

The SSA usually ask for your birth certificate for first-time applicants. They give it right back, and make their own copy.

I was asked for mine.

And yes, no appointment, just show up. There could be a wait, so go earlier in the day if you can.

I was at my local social security office today applying for my SSN. I handed over my paperwork with both my passport and birth certificate, the guy serving me didn't even look at my birth certificate. Only my I-94 and passport.

It most likely varies by office and by person. Better to have it than not though I'd say.

Yeah, probably depends on the person. So what's the difference between the I94 and SS-5? I spoke to a lady on the phone today who mentioned various forms, the I94 being one of them but she didn't mention a SS-5.

An I-94 is what you would have received (or at least had access to, since they are now online-only) if you had entered on a nonimmigrant visa. Since you entered on an immigrant visa then you won't have one.

An SS-5 is an application for a social security card. You can print a copy at the SSA site.
