Dear friends,

Oh wow! we had the interview on 3/15/2016 as expected. We had to rush at the last minute because something unexpected came up. We arrived at the office a couple minutes past the appointment time (very nervous!). Luckly we got in and handed the docs without any problems. The Newark NJ office is very special because you can do everything (interview + oath) in one day... awesome! So after a while sitting there, we kind of noticed the flow... and asked 2 or 3 people that were heading out, how long did the whole process took? The average was around 3 hours (not bad for an immigration office visit!... especially if you get your naturalization certificate).

When it was our turn, I got one of the nicest immigration officers I have ever interacted with. It was a very pleasant experience. He was professional but at the same time a kind person. He noticed that I was a bit jittery because of being almost late. Also I've been in this process for a long number of years and have a huge INS file (nothing shady but just convoluted). He explained that the size of the INS file (which, incidentally I think, was sitting on top of his desk, all three very fat binders of it!) was irrelevant at this point. My green card had been 'adjudicated' 5 years ago and whatever issues existed at that point were considered resolved. That the only purpose of today’s interview was to ascertain if I met the naturalization requirements. The purpose was not to rehash the green card case (Whew! what a relief!!). For me, and I think for most people, the naturalization case is usually very straightforward. So no more drama. I told the officer that my wife was also there for her appointment... and he replied: "I know... I'll interview her too!". We completed the interview in the usual time... probably 10-15 minutes? It took a bit longer because I wanted to make the name I have been using in USA "official". I had a very long name due to the practice in my country of retaining both the Father and Mother's last names. Plus, I have one first name and 2 middle names!! I wanted to simplify to first + middle + last. It was funny because my original name barely fitted in the space allotted for it in the name change form... the officer and I had a good laugh and agreed that it was probably a good idea to change the name to something simpler (ha ha!). Ok... so it took 15 minutes top. I came out with a big smile back to my wife. As expected, she had been wondering why she had not been called since obviously there were multiple officer conducting interviews and she and I arrived to the queue at the same time... hum!? Well...she was very happy to hear about my experience and that she would have the same interviewer. Her interview was even shorter. My wife is very smart and very competitive and had prepared very well for the questions... but in reality it is almost impossible to fail them if you put any effort into it. The officer complimented her because she was the first person he ever interviewed that knew NJ governor's full name (Chris Christie is the only name I know... but apparently there is a longer version).

Anyways... a few minutes after the interviews were completed we got called again to sign the application for the oath. Then we waited another hour or so until they finished processing all the remaining people waiting in the office. Our oath ceremony was the last for that day and it was great! We were on the 15th floor of a building in downtown Newark and you could see the Manhattan skyline through the window. I think NY city is a magical place for all immigrants to this country. I didn't see her but I think Lady Liberty was looking at us and smiling at this latest crop of dream chasers!

Best of luck to every one still waiting for the interview/oath ceremony. God bless you and God bless America!!

Congrats!

we are on the same boat brother . im still waiting for that review and my oath letter !. so stressed out .

Kheops85dz,

Nothing to worry. This appears to be a norm in Chicago office. On the day of my interview , I met another person who had the interview that day. His case was similar to mine and his application was also sent for review. Hang-in tight and we'll be USC soon. Good luck!

For Square and people going to the Newark office:

Hi Square,

Process is relatively simple.
1) You get in the building (pass through security by showing your appointment letter).
2) Check in the INS office (15th floor? whatever says in the letter) and hand your letter
3) Wait about 1-2 hours? depends on number of people ahead of you, etc
4) When they call you, go to the interview. Make sure you know the questions (they are pretty easy). Assuming all the FBI etc checked ok and there are no issues this will be straightforward (if there are issues you would probably know about it... also they would have asked you in advance, I think). I think the only real thing that they would want to verify and double check is your passport showing the entries/exits to make sure you are in compliance with the requirements: for example over the last 5 years you have been physically present in US at least 2.5 years... no absence longer than 6 months (for people married to US Citizen is last 3 years... )
5) They will let you know right away if you pass. Again, do not stress about it... unless you have some issue, the interview is pretty easy. In my case this was by far the easiest/most pleasant interaction I have had with INS.
6) You come out of the interview and wait a little bit. They will call you again to a window and they will hand out an white envelope and a little American flag and will tell you to go wait on the next room for the oath ceremony. The white envelope contains some Welcome materials and information on how to apply for a passport, register to vote, etc.
7) I think they have 2 or 3 oath ceremonies per day. You just wait for yours (the next one) to begin.
8) Take the oath!
Hope all goes well...
Please write afterwards and let me know your experience.

All over but the swearing.

My wife went for her Citizenship interview this morning in San Francisco. Appointment at 8:20, called in at 8:30, out at 8:48 with a smile on her face. Back home in Berkeley 3-hours after we left.

Interviewer was an Asian woman with un-accented English. She complimented my wife on her English. Reviewed the application including personal data and answers to some (but not all) of the yes/no questions.

Read: What is the largest state.

Write: Alaska is the largest state.

Civics questions:

What is the national anthem.

What ocean is on the west coast.

What is the rule of law.

How old does one need to be to vote for President.

Why does the flag have 13 stripes.

What happened in the U.S. on September 11, 2001.

Accepted 2015 tax transcript, asked for EAD/EAP and conditional cards, did not have them handy so said to bring them to the oath ceremony.

Almost done - will update when the Oath letter is received and the expedited Passport is applied for.

Hello everyone,

Today my wife and I went to my interview at 8:55 AM at the San Francisco office. After going through TSA-style security, went up to the 2nd floor and checked in at the reception desk. The receptionist gave me a passport application packet and had me wait for the IO.

After waiting about 10 mins, the IO came out to greet me. She was a very friendly Portuguese lady who was very pleasant throughout the interview. Swore me in, handed her my GC, driver's license and passports(current and expired) then jumped straight to the civics test. Questions asked:

1. Who is in charge of the executive branch?

2. There are 4 amendments to the Constitution about who can vote. Describe one of them.

3. If the President can no longer serve, who serves next?

4. What was one reason the colonists came to America?

5. Name one right from the First Amendment.

6. When must men register for Selective Service?

Read out loud "Which state has the most people?" Wrote down "California has the most people."

The IO then started going over the application. She asked about my personal info(bday, SS number, full name, etc.) and my wife's personal info. She then asked when we were married, the dates, are we still married, do we have children, where do we live, just basic non-invasive questions. She then looked at my passport and asked me about my trips(only taken 2 trips, 12 days total since I became a GC). I renewed my passport last year for 3 years because I planned to be a citizen. She asked why my passport was only for 3 years and I told her about being a citizen. She said that made sense and even joked about saving money.

She then went over the yes or no questions. She asked about half of those, going over the most important ones such as being part of a military unit, advocated terrorism, genocide, etc. etc. I did get cited for speeding(last year) and got a parking ticket January of this year. When she got to the "have you ever been arrested, detained, cited, etc. by a law enforcement officer" I answered I got cited and she asked for what, told her speeding. I also let her know right away I got a parking ticket this year and she laughed, she joked about how expensive the speeding ticket was and how my parking ticket was cheaper than hers. She wrote down the parking ticket on the application and moved on. She asked the questions you're supposed to say yes on (will you defend the Constitution, seve the military if needed, serve the nation, etc.)

She then at the end said she was printing out a paper that had my information on it and that will be on my certificate of Naturalization. :dancing::dancing: :joy:I double checked everything and it was correct. She said that the oath letter will be sent to me within 3 weeks and the oath will take place sometime in April, at the Paramount Theater in Oakland. The only document she asked to see was my Selective Service Registration, I provided to her as well as a copy since she needed a copy of it. She also took a copy of my current passport as well. Signed all the documents she asked to me sign and that concluded the interview.

She said congratulations and said if I had any questions. I asked her about sending in the N-600 because my wife was automatically naturalized at 13 when her father became a citizen and she only has her US passport. My wife is concerned that if she ever lost the passport, how would she have bonafide proof she's a USC. The IO said she should fill out the N-600 and that they'll have her pick it up there at the office. She congratulated me again, wished me an excellent day, and lead me out back to the waiting room. All in all, the process took less than 10 mins. She was really awesome and I couldn't have been more lucky and blessed to get such a wonderful IO like her. :dancing:

Thank you everyone on VJ that helped me prepare for the interview, the IO even remarked how well prepared I was and I owe that to everyone's great input. I hope I can do the same for others by providing my long(lol) post about the interview. Good luck to everyone else and God bless the USA!!!! :dancing::dancing::dancing:
