Thanks so much for the report of the day! It was interesting to here about a "live" one!

We too are concerned about giving up the naturalization cert so fast. Our plan is to go right to the voting registration office and then to the passport office to send away for his since his Mum is aging and we need to be sure he has that in hand. It's a scary feeling for him to hand that over to someone else that same day though. And like you, our mail person leaves a bit to be desired when it comes to delivering mail. Maybe we can have it signed for?

Question for you..did they allow your phone in there for the oath so you get get a photo?

EDIT: I forgot to ask also, did you have to give up your original passport? He would love to keep his Brit passport if possible for sentimental reasons.

The U.S. does not require you to surrender your old passport or renounce your other nationalities. Britain also allows you to hold other nationalities. So he is free to maintain, use, and renew his British passport. It'll make traveling in Europe easier. The only rule is that he'll need to use his U.S. Passport for travel to and from the U.S.

That's my main concern as well :s My mom has a congenital heart disease and I really want to have a passport just in case something happens but I'm also tempted to wait until I actually need it, knowing that I can possibly get same day service at a passport agency. That's what I'm hoping! If I do end up applying for a passport soon, I want to ask if they'll let me give them a prepaid mailing envelope (with insurance to cover replacement of the certificate in case of loss) for them to mail back the certificate. :D

I thought we wouldn't be allowed to bring our phones into the office so I left mine in the car - during Biometrics they specifically tell you that phones are not allowed. I told my husband but he brought his in anyway! LOL. Sure enough, there were signs in the waiting room saying cellphone use is not allowed but a whole bunch of other people were using theirs - hubby said they probably just meant you shouldn't take calls but the sign didn't specify either way. XD

And no, I didn't have to give up my foreign passport! :D If I remember correctly, passports are the property of the government that issued them so the U.S. couldn't/shouldn't take it from you (I think). I do know that Philippine law states that now that I'm a naturalized citizen of another country, my Philippine passport is no longer valid even if I reacquire my Philippine citizenship. I would have to reapply for a new one.

I still have a valid Philippine passport, which I renewed before I got naturalized as a US citizen. Now that I have reacquired my Philippine citizenship, can I still use this passport?

No you can not. The moment you were naturalized as a US citizen, you have relinquished all your rights and privileges as a Philippine citizen, which includes the possession of a Philippine passport. As such, your Philippine passport is no longer valid. Now that you have reacquired your Philippine citizenship, you may now apply for a new Philippine passport.

Other countries may be different and allow you to use your old passport even after taking the Oath of Allegiance but the Philippines requires us to apply to reacquire Philippine citizenship to become dual citizens AND apply for a new passport after reacquisition even though the old one hasn't actually "expired".

And the Oath does require you to renounce all other allegiances aka citizenship but as JimmyHou said, not your other nationalities:

Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America

"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."

https://www.uscis.gov/us-citizenship/naturalization-test/naturalization-oath-allegiance-united-states-america

So I remain a Filipino national though not a Filipino citizen, and your husband remains British even after naturalization. :D

Thank you so much everyone!!! <3

I'm so happy! I can't wait for you all to finish the naturalization process too!!! :D

I'm really scared about applying for the passport. Is there any way I could apply without having to leave my Naturalization Certificate? I really don't like the idea of having no way to prove my citizenship while my passport is getting processed :s I need it for a lot more stuff than just updating my Social Security record at the moment. Is my only choice waiting until I actually have a trip planned if I don't want to leave my original certificate? Is there any way a passport facility would accept a copy if you present the original when you apply in person? Our mailman has misdelivered mail quite a bit since we moved here and I'm afraid that my certificate will get lost. :s

For first time/new applications, ORIGINAL proof of citizenship is required. This is because the post office is merely an acceptance facility for the State Dept. They do not actually process your application but merely pass it along to the Dept of State. There are some horror stories (as with any process) but overall the process is very efficient and reliable. Thousands of people use it without any issues.

But if you are that concerned, you have 3 options in my opinion: 1) apply for expedited processing which costs an additional $60, 2) apply at one of the regional passport agencies operated by the State Dept. for same day or next day processing but they require proof of imminent travel to use this service, and 3) if you have no immediate plans to travel overseas, defer applying for a passport until you have addressed the other items that you are concerned about which require proof of citizenship.

In my experience, expedited processing is not that much faster than routine. I applied for my passport on Dec 23 using routine processing, the check was cashed on Dec 30, my new passport produced by Jan 7 and finally delivered to me via overnight mail on Jan 9th. I received my NC on Jan 19th in almost pristine condition. And in between I sent back my passport to correct a printing error which was resolved very quickly and my reprinted passport returned within 7 days of submission. In fact, my reprinted passport arrived a day after the NC.

I think I'm leaning towards #3. XD And I think I will save the extra $60 as well and just go for routine processing since it seems like it's not peak season so they're not getting as many passport applications :)

I did just call the Department of State and they said that I should definitely ask the Post Office if it's possible to make it so that the Naturalization Certificate gets mailed back to me using a trackable method (the person I spoke with suggested Certified Mail).

I love seeing one of us in "red ink" now! :luv::luv:

I know soon yours will be too!!!:dance::luv:
