I'm so happy! I can't wait for you all to finish the naturalization process too!!! :D

I'm really scared about applying for the passport. Is there any way I could apply without having to leave my Naturalization Certificate? I really don't like the idea of having no way to prove my citizenship while my passport is getting processed :s I need it for a lot more stuff than just updating my Social Security record at the moment. Is my only choice waiting until I actually have a trip planned if I don't want to leave my original certificate? Is there any way a passport facility would accept a copy if you present the original when you apply in person? Our mailman has misdelivered mail quite a bit since we moved here and I'm afraid that my certificate will get lost. :s

Oh! I forgot to post about my interview experience XD Thank you for reminding me, javier2014!

My interview appointment at the Fresno, CA Field Office was at 12:45 PM. We had to wait a while for my number to be called. I think I finally got called in around around 1:30 PM. The interview went really fast! I stepped into the Immigration Officer's office and was immediately sworn in. She asked for my Permanent Resident Card, Passport, Military ID and Driver's License. She checked them then we started off with the Test right away.

Reading:

When is Columbus Day?

Writing:

Columbus Day is in October.

Civics Test Questions (can't remember what order they were):

Who is the Chief Justice of the United States now?

Name one war fought by the United States in the 1900s.

The House of Representatives has how many voting members?

Who is the “Father of Our Country”?

In what month do we vote for President?

We elect a U.S. Representative for how many years?

After that, the IO went over my whole N-400 application. She said that my immigration packet was the most organized she had ever seen and that she really appreciated it. She asked to see our Marriage Certificate. She said she knew that it was somewhere in my file but it was very thick and seeing how organized I was and prepared with my binder full of documents that she knew I had it with me and it would be easier to ask to see my copy than to look through my whole packet to find it. LOL. She went through all the questions on my N-400 form - we talked about the military here and there (she handles all the military cases). Then she asked me if I wanted to change my name to follow the Filipino traditional naming convention! I had originally intended to change my name to follow the American way and split my two first names so the second part of my first name would become my middle name but she said she couldn't do that since the Fresno Field Office no longer officers judicial oath ceremonies. She said that she knows my Permanent Resident Card was issued in a different state, Michigan, which did not allow us to follow the Filipino way during AOS but a lot of FIlipinos are naturalized in California so they are familiar with the Filipino naming convention. In this case, it would be a name correction. My Naturalization Certificate was issued as (FIRST NAME) (FATHER'S LAST NAME) (HUSBAND'S LAST NAME)...and then we got to the end of the form and she was signing some stuff and I got all choked up and quietly asked her if I had passed and she said that I had passed right at the beginning after the test! And that we just had to go through the whole interview. She asked me how my husband and I met and I told her our love story :D while she was preparing my "receipt" - the piece of paper that shows she was recommending my application for approval. After that, she handed me the form for the Oath Ceremony and explained that most people don't usually get to take the Oath of Allegiance on the same day so they have a bit of a gap between their interview and their Oath and even though there would only be a gap of around one hour between my interview and Oath, I still needed to fill out the form (it asks you about any changes that may have occurred since your interview). My Oath Ceremony was scheduled for 2:30 PM. She said that I could leave the office and come back and that there was a possibility that my Oath would be delayed until around 2:45 or 3:00 PM depending on how long it took to process my packet. I was trying so hard not to cry as I thanked the IO.

My husband and I decided to wait. Right at 2:30 PM, someone came out with a few Naturalization Certificates and started calling people's names. Mine wasn't one of them so my husband approached her and another IO after she swore in the other people and asked about mine. I piped in that the IO who interviewed me did say my Oath could get delayed 15-30 mins. and they said that they think we'll be fine in that case. Around 2:45 PM, a different IO asked us what we were waiting for and they went to check on it again - a few minutes later, he came back and said that they were processing my Naturalization Certificate and they were definitely tracking it so we had nothing to worry about. A little before 3 PM, the IO who swore in the previous group of applicants came and told us that they were just processing the name correction. Finally, the IO who interviewed me came out again - she came out 2 times before to speak with a fellow military applicant - and took passport photos from the other applicant (she was a fellow Filipina who was in the U.S. Navy)! I got to take my Oath with her a little after 3 PM! It was very emotional for me and I was holding back tears as I took the Oath.

It was an incredible experience! I found the Fresno Office IOs as well as the guards and receptionists to be very friendly! It was raining quite a bit when we arrived and I was trying to juggle my binder and purse to get my ID out and the guard said to take my time - there weren't any people waiting behind me when we got there but I didn't want to hold up the line just in case someone else came up behind me.

Thanks so much for the report of the day! It was interesting to here about a "live" one!

We too are concerned about giving up the naturalization cert so fast. Our plan is to go right to the voting registration office and then to the passport office to send away for his since his Mum is aging and we need to be sure he has that in hand. It's a scary feeling for him to hand that over to someone else that same day though. And like you, our mail person leaves a bit to be desired when it comes to delivering mail. Maybe we can have it signed for?

Question for you..did they allow your phone in there for the oath so you get get a photo?

EDIT: I forgot to ask also, did you have to give up your original passport? He would love to keep his Brit passport if possible for sentimental reasons.
