British Accent

My fiance's accent is extremely subtle. It's strange since his entire family have the strong Liverpudlian accent but with him you can only really here it on certain words.

He was visiting here and we ran into a British family in Chicago and they actually thought he was just faking his accent because it was so slight.

I do have to say I wouldn't mind if it was a stronger accent aha

I get a lot of "I love your accent", but I'm also regularly asked whether I'm from Australia. I know my Welsh accent's softened a bit over the years, but... Australia? I've no idea why they would think that.

Of course, as soon as I tell them that I'm originally from Wales, I have to explain that no, Wales is not "in England"

Eighteen years in the US and I still don't understand Velveeta, TV ads for prescription drugs, only getting 2 weeks paid vacation, or why anyone believes anything they see on Fox "News".

I'm sure you Brits in America have experienced lots of attention because of your accent. We seldom go out without some woman telling my husband "I just love your accent". Last night on Halloween was the best ever.

This tiny tot of a girl dressed as a cowgirl with horse incorporated as part of the costume came to the door. My husband chatted with her saying he liked her outfit and asked the name of her horse. He gave her candy and said "Happy Halloween". As she walked away, she turned to her mother and said, "I like his voice".

It seems even four-year-old cowgirls are charmed by a British accent. Too cute!!

Thanks for sharing that very cute story. :joy:

Very cute story :) we took our 6 year old trunk or treating and every car we went to people seemed enchanted by my hubbs accent. It came to the point where he had to stay quiet if we wanted to leave at a reasonable time lol.

I also love that my husband has been in my son's life since he was 3 and my little guy picked up on a few English words. This school year his teacher tried correcting him that the last letter of the alphabet is "zee" not "zed" and my son tried to correct her by telling her that his daddy says it that way and that's the right way. :)

Funny Thread!

When I first talked to my fierce on the phone i was very impressed with her accent, Now its just normal for me but all of our friends here sill comment on it and of coarse everyone we meet new here has something to say nice about her accent. When she goes back to England though, all her family and friends say she is speaking more American every time!

Me on the other end, I am speaking more English as time goes on!

I'm going to turn on the air-con before I hover that bloody rug then going to have some shepherds pie and pudding before I take a granny kip then going out to meet my blokes at the pub! I also bought some new trainers too! I'll be a regular Cockney soon! ;)

When we first meet over in England she took me out for a traditional English breakfast at the hotel we were staying at that included some "Black Pudding" YUK!! I know now why she was laughing as I eat my first mouthful.

I must say the accent isn't the first thing that attracted me to Jon, but it is definitely a plus! I mainly love the way he says Capri-Sun... its more like CAP (as in baseball cap)ri- Sun. It makes me smile every time! I am not sure why its that one word, but even if I am having a bad day he knows it makes me smile and giggle a little when he says it so he makes sure to fit it into conversation when I am having a bad day!

I agree with CrazyWorld as I have started to say more and more British words as opposed to the American version. I seem to have just started copying what he says on certain things... the main example being football. I no longer call American Football just Football... Football to me is now what other Americans call Soccer and there is no going back... but one thing I will stand firm on..... IT'S A COOKIE!!!!! NOT A BISCUIT!!!! (here ends my two line rant)

Lastly, may I just apologize to every UK person who has been subjected to the question of are you Australian... to me those accents are two completely different accents. To me it would be like comparing a Bostonian accent to a Southern accent. I also apologize that no one in America seems to remember things from their Geography class. As someone who still dreams to be a teacher one day... it pains me how bad our education system seems to be.

I think the 'I love your accent' is part and parcel of going out now!

I have had to americanise certain words or else I just get that ####### look from people!

Asking for wadder in resturants instead of warter is the main one lol

Car names are always funny, Jagwar, Neeesan, and Marzda are my faves

But as mentioned before the 'are you Australian' is getting a little boring now, I just say 'are you Canadian' back lol

Keep the comments coming this thread is funny

Here is a funny one,

My mum(mom) had asked my fiance to hold the fanny pack with the cash in it during our garage sale and her eyes got real big and she was giggling a little. She pulled me over to the side and said in England fanny refers to a women's private parts. lol

We both were laughing in Virginia beach when there were large 3 foot signs saying Fanny packs on sale here!

I've got a month before I fly over still, but I've had plenty of comments on visits.... a pretty common thread goes like this:

US person: hey, where are you from?

Me: England.

US person, looking at me like I'm a crazy person: I know. That was obvious. I mean, where in England?

Which leaves me feeling a little daft. Tina always reacts with panic if I say anything that sounds American, like accidentally flattening my 't's. I think if my accent morphs into something more noticeably American a part of her heart will break :D so it's good to hear that apparently that doesn't happen.

June 11th 2015 - NOA1. off to California Service Center :D

July 27th - NOA2 !!! much faster than expected

August 19th - rang NVC, got LND case number and told our file is 'about to go to London'

August 20th - booked medical at Knightsbridge for September 16th, 10:10am. Feels good.

September 1st - rearranged medical for October 5th, 13:30, because reasons.

September 4th - packet 3 received.

October 5th - medical completed at Knightsbridge. X-ray technician suggested playing Barry White during the procedure.

November 12th - visa interview. Nailed it!

November 20th - collected visa package from DX Southampton

December 6th - one way flight to Philadelphia!

December 31st - getting married! :wow:

NOA1 to Interview: 5 months and 1 day.

Yeah the' which part of England' is the follow up question, to which I would answer 'Wellingborough'

US person 'is that near London'

Me 'No its about 60 miles North'

US Person 'Oh London'

Please understand I am not slagging off all Americans, I married one, but even my wife bangs her head in frustration with her fellow countrymen!

My wife lived in UK for 4 years even she thinks fannypack is funny now lol

I have to admit as the American I do something similar. I either ask is that near London or where is that in comparison to London. Since Jon is there I am trying to learn more and more about it but London and Norwich are the only two cities where I actually know where they are on the map, so I always ask where people are in comparison to those two cities.

The region or county thing still confuses me a bit ex. Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, East Anglia, etc. I am struggling to find what I can compare those to in US terms which I probably shouldn't do because they probably don't have a US equivalent but that's where my American ignorance comes out I guess lol.

Can any of you explain how the term Loo(sp?) came about for the toilet? I still don't get it and Jon hasn't really been able to explain how it started.

OK, I am neither British nor married to a Brit, but I love languages (and first learned British English before I moved to the US, so am well versed in both versions), but I have to ask: what or who is "granny kip"? :)
