 Save your money and do not file this application. When we filed the I-485 we were told by the USCIS that we needed to file this at the same time. The processing time on the I-485 was 7 months and the I-765 would only take 3 months. So, we payed the 180.00$ so she could work while waiting for her green card. We recieved the Authorization card the same week as our interveiw, just three days prior. At our interview they kept the card, and told us that we no longer needed it, and that the temperary green card stamp in her passport was all that she needed. We were also told that the processing time is much shorter now, and that we would recieve her green card in 1 to 3 weeks. So, we paid 180.00$ for three days of work authorization, and there are no refunds for fees. We live in Oregon, so I cannot say that it is like that everywhere, and they also told us, that my wife had already passed all security clearances. If she had not been cleared, we would have been given the work autorization back. I hope this helps someone save some money, that I spent unnessessarly. God bless!

I disagree.

There are people on this board who have been waiting for the results of their FBI name check for years. There are also people who do not get approved at the first interview and have to go through USCIS investigation. There is no guarantee thet you'll be approved on the spot and everything will be hunky dory, so an EAD is sometimes the only document that proves you have some kind of a status in the US..

I never got my EAD because of the USCIC screw up - they forgot to take my fingerprints until right before the interview, but I never regretted filing the EAD application. It would have come in handy if I got stuck in the name check or if some USCIS clerk lost my case

How long did it take to get the greencard? The same thing happened to us - Green card ended up being processed much faster than we thought. I kinda wished we didn't file for EAD, but like someone else said, you never know how long it could take. I have a friend who's husband got here a year and half before mine, and he still hasn't been approved.

timeline doesn't matter.

This is vey bed advice to give people..... you were lucky and got your innterview and approval very quickly.... what about others who have to wait 6 months + for an interview date and then dont get cleared namecheck for months after that... you have no way of knowing if you will get a quick interview or approval at interview....

Filing for the EAD at the same time as the AOS is like taking out an insurance policy... yes there is a chance you may never need it BUT if you do and you filed for it along with your AOS then the chances are you will have it within 100 days of filing, if you did not file it along with AOS and you wait until you either dont get approval at interview or your interview is taking longer than you thought then you have wasted 3 months and will still have to wait 100 days+ to get it...

EAD can be used for more than just work, it can get you a SSN if you did not arrive on a K1, it can allow you to open bank accounts, Get a drivers licence/state ID, it can be used as proof that you are here legaly, and can give you peace of mind while you wait for AOS approval and your Greencard...

Just because you were very lucky and completed AOS very quickly does not mean you should be telling everyone that filing for EAD is a waste of money...

This seems to be a recurring topic. Frequently recurring. I think that one way of looking at it is this ... if you only actually use your EAD for two or three weeks - even if you only use it for one week - doesn't the possible income outweigh the initial $180 expense?

For me, after not working for so long - I know that the extra time and expense I took to drive down to Baltimore from Toronto (in order to get the stamp) have already been made up for in my one little paycheque - and if the EAD enables me to keep working - or work again sooner, then it will well be worth it.

This is something that each person should weigh individually. For those of us who need an income or a job to live comfortably, then it's worth it, I would think.

If you happen to be related to Donald Trump - then maybe you have a different take on it.

Personally I think you're passing out crappy advice. My husband has been waiting 8 months for his green card. He filed EAD and is able to work while he waits and will have to reapply AGAIN due to not having his green card yet. So tell us...what are those of us to do that aren't as lucky as YOU????? Sorry...but your advice is #######.
