Can't thank the VJ community enough with responses and posts regarding getting my wife here. She's been in the States now about 3.5 months and has already gotten a decent paying job to supplement my income and also allows her to help her family back in the Philippines. Anyways...

We are looking to bring her father over in a few months to take him to a Chicago Bulls game, the auto show here is also the same time, and just show him around and spend some father/daughter time. This is where it gets muddy:

1) What does he need to show that he intends to return to the Philippines? He only works at a sari sari store as that's the only work he could get, the house he lives at was bought by my wife and her younger sister and brother still live there (ages 21 and 18 - both in school). My wife's mother is still working abroad in the UAE. Other than still caring and living at home with his children, he doesn't have economic reason to return to the Philippines.

2) I know based on his economic status and the fact that the wife is still working her 3 month contract to hire, I'll need to act his as sponsor.

I'm worried he will get denied. He doesn't really have any economic evidence of why he would return to the Philippines and social status other than the two adult aged kids and his grand kids that he helps care for because his oldest son basically abandoned them and the family.

Any tips or is this a lost cause?

Unfortunately, it appears to be a lost cause. But, you can roll the dice if you have the cash to burn.

The alternative is to have your wife petition him when she becomes a U.S. citizen.

Never a lost cause, unless you do not apply.

No sponsor required for a Visitor Visa.
