Hey guys, we have our interview for adjustment of status for coming up and we are really nervous!

We don't really seem to have that many of the supporting documents since my wife has only been in the country for 4 months. We do have an apartment lease with both of our names, photos, transcripts of communications. However, we don't have joint bank accounts, credit cards, or anything else. All the utility bills are under my name. We had a small court wedding only, we plan to have a destination wedding later next year (we need to save money!) Only her family members attended the court wedding, all my family members were out of the country or had other obligations. I plan to name her as a beneficiary on my will.

Is this enough? What are some other things we can bring to the interview to support our relationship?

Also, her english is not that great, but I am bilingual. Can I translate for her at the interview, or should we bring another person to translate?

Thansk for your help!

While you're updating your will, prepare medical power of attorney documents for each of you, naming the other as your agent. It's not only useful evidence for the AOS interview but could be critically important in an emergency.

Would you consider opening a joint bank account, or adding her to your existing account? Again, that's useful not just for the interview but for life in general.

Other possibilities:

  • Has your wife been added to your health insurance? Can you get documentation of that?
  • Do you have life insurance for which she is the beneficiary?
  • Do you have joint auto insurance?
  • Joint renters insurance?
  • Have you made her the beneficiary of your pension account, if you have one?
  • Are your cellphones on a family plan? Print out something showing that although the bill is in your name, it covers phones in both her name and yours.
  • Do you have any joint memberships? Gym, Costco, AAA, dues for a religious institution?
  • Are you each named as the others emergency contact in various places, e.g. work/school, doctor, dentist?

Eighteen years in the US and I still don't understand Velveeta, TV ads for prescription drugs, only getting 2 weeks paid vacation, or why anyone believes anything they see on Fox "News".

Hi glassgow22

We have the same situation, we will have our interview for adjustment of status next month.

But still we don't have joint bank accounts and joint medical insurance.

Because they are asking for an ID under my married name and I still couldn't get any because they are asking for my EAD card.

My EAD just got approved so we will go back to the bank and hopefully to joint with my husband's.

You can contact your credit card company and also the utility bills to ask to joint your wife.

My husband did it, I already added on our utility bills and just waiting for the joint credit card to arrive.

Do not get too flummoxed about the paucity of marriage evidence that you have for the AOS interview. A marriage license is good, some wedding photos are helpful, any other financial/official documentation is icing on the cake. USCIS realizes that most folks do not have a lot of "marriage bonafides" at this stage of their marriage.

A word of advice, start saving every scrap of paper, in a shoe box or file drawer, that shows joint property, commingling of finances, any type of "marriage bonafides" from now on. You will very likely need that and more when it comes to the next stop in the immigration journey, Removal of Conditions.

YMMV.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Thanks for all the helpful feedback!

Regarding the language issue, do we still need an interpreter for my wife if I am bilingual and can interpret for her? Or do we need a separate interpreter in case they want to question her without my involvement.

If so, can it be another family member or friend that we can bring to help interpret?

My thoughts exactly! How could you acquire much evidence when you had to marry within 90 days of your spouses arrival in the US? That said, as Pitaya mentioned, start now for the ROC documentation. Joan and I did have some additional evidence (my life insurance policy and retirement plan noting Joan as beneficiary, etc.) and our interviewer said that this would be good evidence for the ROC stage. Start early and good luck!
