As with LouLou and Reba, I ain't gonna be arguing!! If my passport is not processed in time, I'll just not go - which would be a shame, but better that than being stuck in Canada.

I mean, what do you do if you're stuck in Canada? Hypothetically speaking? I suppose if they wouldn't let me across the border at Niagara, I'd just drive back and try at the Maine border - at least that way I'd be closer to home.

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

In the end, it doesn't matter what the letter of the law states. It is up to them whether or not they'll let you in, regardless of your status in the US.

No, that is completely false. The rules are different for permanent residents,

but if you are a U.S. citizen, the government has absolutely no power to

prevent you from returning to the U.S. You can act like an obnoxious jerk,

be drunk, drugged, naked, or have no passport -- none of that matters.

well how 'bout you try it and le us know how it goes eh?

Rest assured I will give it a go -- as soon as I get my naturalization certificate :D

I imagine the Patriot Act would have provisions in there that could prevent even a US citizen from entering. I don't plan on finding out tho  my next vacation will be to Florida, not the MiddleEast.

I don't believe it has, Jackie. Any such provision would be illegal / unconstitutional.

Most constitutional flaws in the Patriot Act were corrected by Congress last year to the point

that even the ACLU had no choice but to drop their lawsuit challenging its constitutionality.

Wow! I admire your #######, but you just don't understand that right has very little meaning when dealing with people in power. You have obviously never been stopped by a cop in the south. You think that you you can't simply disappear? Think again. Money talks, OJ walks. Yes, you can buy "justice" but there is no guarantee that you will get justice regardless of what the constitution says. Without money, you can get 12 years for ATTEMPTED breaking and entering. Not robbery. Not burglary. ATTEMPTED b & e. I made the mistake of advising that person to be a man and take responsibility for his actions instead of pleading not guilty and working out a bargin. ACLU does not help people like him get justice. No, your new home is not as pure as you think.

Are cops in the south above the law?

This topic is leading to cop corruption. Well, if you have been to Indochina (Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam) you'll know how corrupted they are compared to the US. I've been to CA, as much as money talks it's the jury that let OJ go not the judge, not the scientists. DNA testing was only at its infancy then, and many juror do not understand how concrete DNA is to link an individual's blood with the suspect.

Hence the was, not is. A sentence designed to be uncontroversial. :)
