Earlier this year, UCI's student council voted to stop the display of the American flag in their chambers and on campus because it was "divisive" not "inclusive" of the diverse student body. Yes, an American flag being flown at American university was found to be offensive.

Well, they have gone and done it again. An on campus career fair is being held (sounds admirable). But, a petition to prevent U.S. CBP to have a booth there eventually convinced the CBP to pull out. The petition claimed that the presence of CBP on campus (yes, U.S. Federal officers on an American campus) would be a “blatant disregard to undocumented students’ safety and well-being.” Apparently it's not nice to have law enforcement in the presence of law breakers. Ridiculous.

Many universities are very open-minded... as long as everyone thinks exactly as they do.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Many universities are very open-minded... as long as everyone thinks exactly as they do.

Agreed, kind of the direction our country is going. It is fine to have your own opinions as long they agree with mine and don't offend me.

In a follow up article this morning, it was a petition of 650 undocumented students (who by the way get the in-state tuition break) out of a student population of 30,000. Clearly, the minority, who are not citizens, get their way. Disturbing.

did 'our country' just ban border patrol from attending job fairs? seems like you're blowing this out of proportion.

The petition, which garnered more than 650 supporters at change.org, said the “undocumented community is directly affected by deportation and detention polices that are carried out by Border Patrol.” It points to approximately 500 undocumented students at UCI.

A fourth-year student submitted the online petition after trying, unsuccessfully, to get UCI administrators to drop the agency from last week’s event, according to New University, the campus newspaper. Parshan Khosravi, president of the Associated Students of UCI, also wrote an email to the university’s career center requesting the agency’s invitation be canceled.

Before federal officials decided to back out of the event, Khosravi told the New University that Customs and Border Protection’s presence at last Thursday’s career fair would have sent the message “that undocumented students are not welcome.”

border patrol withdrew, and the school says it's up to the students to determine what companies/agencies they want represented at the career fair.

how does this singular event translate to the direction the entire country is going? i'm not a fan of trigger warnings and certainly feel that special snowflake syndrome is a detriment but i'm not seeing the whole hell in a handbasket aspect to this story..

I bet if they had banned planned parenthood from a public universty, you would not be so "whatever"

Just an example I have no beef with planned parenthood

but that comparison wouldn't mean anything. no one was banned. a health service wasn't banned. customs and border patrol wasn't banned. they withdrew from a career day.

it's not that i'm 'whatever' about it, i'm 'whatever' about using this story as an example of 'the direction our country is headed'

drama.

I never said "our country" banned the Border Patrol at the career fair. I, living in California and near UCI find it it very newsworthy that the undocumented students who signed the petition said it was because they felt their presence would be “blatant disregard to undocumented students’ safety and well-being.”, their words, not mine. Federal agents on an American campus is a threat to undocumented students? Wag your finger somewhere else.

Not really. The First Amendment gives the right to do just that.

Absolutely....

The Right to Expel
July 25, 2014

When word spread this month that George Fox University had received an exemption to Title IX, allowing it to discriminate against a transgender student by denying him the housing he requested, many advocates for transgender students were stunned. Federal regulations under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 do in fact require the Education Department to exempt colleges from rules that violate their religious beliefs. During the debate, George Fox officials noted that they were objecting to a housing request only, and that they haven't kicked the student out of the university.

But now the Education Department has confirmed that it has since awarded two more exemptions to Title IX to Christian colleges that want to discriminate against transgender students.

Right, because they (650 of 30,000) were undocumented, i.e. here illegally and felt them just having a booth on campus would be a “blatant disregard to undocumented students’ safety and well-being.”

How was there safety and well-being threatened by the CBP recruiting? I guess that's kind of what I'm struggling with. And same campus that wanted to ban the American flag because it is divisive and not inclusive. Sorry, I think it's newsworthy and silly that such things occur. Maybe they could make it a "Sanctuary Campus". Just my opinion.

did i say it wasn't newsworthy? i'm just saying i think silly things are bound to happen when students are calling the shots. also, i can see how if i were a student in the us in immigration limbo, i'd not want cbp around..haven't parents been rallying together to keep army recruiters away from public hs sponsored career fairs as well?
