Ohio: SSN required for marriage license?

Hi there,

I'm wondering if anyone has actual experience about whether or not an SSN was required to obtain a marriage license in the state of Ohio? I have seen a number of threads but cannot find a definite answer.

I am moving to Columbus on November 8th, and we have an appointment to be married at the courthouse two weeks later on November 23rd. I'm planning to apply for my SSN first thing in the morning on November 9th. Basically I'm hoping that in the event it doesn't get mailed quickly enough or something goes wrong that we can go through with the November 23rd appointment without me having a SSN.

Anyone have experience with this in Ohio?

No US state requires you to have an SSN before you can successfully obtain a marriage licence. If you have an SSN then federal law requires you to provide it, but if you don't have one then simply inform the clerk of this.

My son was just married 10 days ago in Ohio. All they needed to obtain the marriage license was a photo ID.

The moment i arrived in ohio the following day i applied for ssn.. glad i got my card after 2 weeks coz they ask my ssn as we applied for marriage license... i guess it depends n maybe every county has different requirements... im in mason near cincinnati area

I just checked with him and yes he had to verbally tell them his SS#.

SSN card doesn't take too long to arrive is there a reason why OP can't wait for that? You need a photo Id which the passport will work but you should know your SSN too.

Unless someone has done it without knowing SSN

We have family coming from Ontario and Minnesota which is why we're hoping I will either receive the SSN quickly or be able to get the marriage license without one. Does anyone know if you can get your SSN number from the office before actually receiving the card?

Sometimes if you return to the office they will give you a printout of your number before you actually receive the number in the mail.

I got married to my wife near Cleveland in September 2015. We both live in Ireland and we had our wedding near where she is from.

To answer your question, no I did not need to provide a SSN to get the licence. What I did need to provide was my passport and my birth certificate.

Also, because I don't have an SSN they split myself and my wife apart to answer 5 question on a form to check if they match - the idea is to screen for sham marriages I reckon. The court official didn't really look at the answers but it might be one of those things that pop up as part of immigration process - that's just a guess on my part though.
