I talked to a lawyer today that specializes in visas, and he said the only way I would be approved for a tourist visa to the US is if I had a Schengen visa and have traveled to Europe. Anyone else have any insight on this??

Not the only way but yes, it helps.

Basically, if you were able to get a visa to other developped countries, visited there once or twice, and then went back home, the US Embassy consular officer may see you as less of a risk to stay illegally in the USA.

A Schengen visa might help, but not necessarily.. I've seen people who successfully got B1/B2 approval, and US visa was the first visa in their entire life.

The most important is to prove you have strong ties with your home country. If you are not able to provide this, a schengen visa won't help anyway.

But it doesn't hurt to try - never know what can happen :)

Not sure you really need a lawyer - NO ONE can guarantee you the result you want, applying for US visa. And if you try, the visa fee is gonna be your ONLY expense.

Good Luck!!!!

Why are you talking to a lawyer about a tourist visa?

And no a Schengen visa is not a guarantee of being granted a B2 visa, nor is it a requirement.

All it does is show you (may) have travelled to other countries and returned, which can help in your application, but there are other factors they take into consideration not just previous travel.

Nothing wrong with a trip that you require the visa for.

I say go for it.

This is legit assumption but it is still an assumption.
