When my wife arrives in the US this November, she may not get added onto my health insurance through my employer right away. Are there any short term health coverage options out there?

Is that what your employer told you? Immigration is considered a life changing event and does qualify for immediate addition to your policy.

You should inquire or re inquire with your HR department.

No, we're ok in that area... my employer recognizes her immigration as a life changing event. However they will need to verify her in the SAVE database. We have 30 days to sign her up, but I want to ensure that she will have some sort of health coverage in the event my employer cannot verify her in SAVE immediately and we find ourselves waiting a week or more.

I've been looking at this site to cover my husband for a couple months since he activated his visa in July and then had to go back to the UK for a couple months to finish up a few things and I refuse to pay premiums when he's not even here. :)

www.ehealthinsurance.com/

Mar 2014 - Married

5/7/14?? - Attorney mailed paperwork

5/15/14 DHS cashed check

5/19/14 - NOA1 received with PD 5/12/14

10/17/14 - NOA2 received

10/28/14 - Email received that file has been sent to NVC

11/13/14 - NVC received file

12/10/14 - NVC Assigned case number

12/12/14 - AOS Fee Invoiced

12/13/14 - Submit email to NVC to remove attorney as DS-261 Agent

12/16/14 - AOS Fee showing as Paid

12/17/14 - IV Fee invoiced

12/20/14 - IV fee available and paid

12/27/14 - DS-260 submitted

1/2/15 - AOS and IV packages sent to NVC

1/5/15 - USPS delivered packages to NVC

1/7/15 - NVC scanned in packages. Let the countdown begin...

1/30/15 - FINALLY got a reply to my email to remove the attorney from the DS-261

3/9/15 - Called NVC and they have checklisted us for an "incorrect" decree absolute from the UK, even though it is the legal official document. Have requested a supervisor review.

4/28/15 - Called and NVC said supervisor had reviewed and now claimed that the decree absolute was not included. After disagreeing with the less than helpful lady on the phone, and her not being able to get the review time right. (She kept changing her story between 42 days and 30 days).

4/30/15 - Sent the same copy of the decree absolute to the NVC from the UK, highlighting the "decree absolute" wording with a letter stating that this is the only document provided by the UK government.

6/5/15 - Case complete!!!

6/12/15 - Called and interview is scheduled for July 1!

Nothing to do with SAVE, this is health insurance.

Well the HR rep for my employer keeps harping on the fact that they will have to look her up in SAVE to verify her status and eligibility to be added on to my health benefits.

You can get Visitor Insurance ... i tried to link it but it keeps getting removed, anyways, do a goodle search for visitor insurance, there is a great website that starts with insu and ends in buy, gives very detailed information and quotes.

Total rubbish, this is an Insurance issue not an immigration issue, immigration is only relevant as it is a qualifying event, her arrival demonstrates that. She will have an I 551 stamp.

Quite common for HR not to know their ####### from their elbow.

As an aside there are many people with spouses here illegally who have them on the their health insurance.

Exactly! I got the feeling that she didn't know what she was talking about when she said that I could go ahead and sign my wife up during our open enrollment earlier this month. Well, as it turns out the way they have everything configured on the company website for benefits, you cannot enroll a spouse unless you provide their SSN as well. Now you think she would've known this already.

Honestly I don't feel like arguing with bring wall when I bring my wife in to sign her up, so we may just wait until when get her SS card... that way she will have no excuses.

You also do not need a SSN, they use it as an identifying number. They can use something else. Not everybody here legally gets a SSN.

Wife is eligible for health insurance through your employer and they are unfortunately stalling and preventing her from having access to care. Other way you can obtain health insurance is through the state exchange (if offered in your state) or the federal exchange. The federal law is very clear on this, and it has nothing to do with SAVE.

By law everyone must have health insurance or pay a penalty in taxes. Short term insurances that are bought out of pocket are not federally compliant. That means they are not recognized by federal law, and the penalty will still apply.

I figured an SSN would not be mandatory, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to have it. What options do i have if the HR rep tries to ignore federal law and insist on verifying her in SAVE? Are there any federal documents that I can show her, or will I need to consult an attorney?

Waste of breath, escalate until you find someone who has a clue.
