Hi everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone on here. This site is an amazing resource already and I haven't even submitted anything yet--hoping to get first batch of paperwork sent next week (just waiting on original signed docs to get here from Turkey).

It seems like everyone tells their stories, so here is ours...A year ago, I decided on a whim to travel to Istanbul solo on my way to meet my friends in Greece. I was overworked and stressed and definitely not looking for any sort of romance or relationship in my life at the time. However, I met Mehmet, and took a leap and agreed to meet up with him the next day...we spent every moment together for the rest of my trip, but still, when I left, I assumed it was a lovely holiday romance that would end with my flight to Greece. Yet, to my surprise, we continued to talk and text every day. I went back in February for a week to decide "if it was really real" and after a lot of serious talks about what we each wanted for the future, we both agreed it was....then on my departure date, there was a blizzard in Istanbul and the airport shut down--giving us three extra days together--best flight cancelation ever! A couple months of missing each other later, and with me drowning in a bad work situation, I decided to live my life and just walk away from my soul-sucking job and spend the summer with him. We lived together for three months, got engaged, and I'm back in the U.S. now starting the K1 process.

Though this process is already kind of torturous, it helps so much to have discovered this amazing community full of knowledge and support, so I thank you all and look forward to getting to know some of you better.

And if anyone has any Turkey-specific advice or warnings, I'm all ears!

Thanks again,

Erin

Erin,

Just to say that I LOVE Istanbul (having visited numerous times and taught at a university summer program there twice; no family connection to the place otherwise) and was so happy to read your nice story. I personally am adjusting status from within the US (my husband is the USC) so I am afraid I don't have a ton of advice to give on your particular situation, but am wishing you and your fiancé all the best!

As general common sense pointers though: just take your time when filing out all the forms at each stage (read the USCIS instructions first; your case should be fairly straightforward and the forms shouldn't leave much room for confusion), keep working on your relationship (interact as much as possible with each other's families even if each of you has to serve as translators -- you are marrying a person but gaining a whole new family) and arm yourselves with patience.

Welcome to the forum.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
