My husband will finally be immigrating as a permanent resident next week and I was presented with a problem when trying to add him to my health insurance plan - They do not consider "immigrating to the country" to be a "Life Event" apparently.

Is there some proviso or specific phrase I need to use to have his immigration counted as a life event (we have been married for a year, and thus marriage is outside of the time frame allowed for a mid-year change, but perhaps it is common to claim "domestic partnership" as begining our acutal domestic cohabitation... for example...).

Alternatively, to cover him for the two months he will not be covered by my 2016 enrollment, are sites such as "inbound immigrant" or "g1g" validated non-scam methods of short-term coverage?

I feel like this must be a common issue, so I am just not researching the correct things or asking the correct questions, so any tips whatsoever would be appreciated.

many thanks in advance,

Sorry for being unclear - no, I wanted to add him as my spouse/dependent on my employer-provided health insurance plan.

I WAS able to successfully add him for NEXT year because my employer-provided coverage enrollment period just happens to be now, but to cover him for the remainder of 2015 I would be required to make changes to my current plan, which is only allowed outside of enrollment windows in the case of "Life Events."

Im not a pro but what i think is some kinda words like "recently gaining immigration benefits" would let u add your spouse to your remainder coverage. At least i did that past year on marketplace website on behalf of my brother and was able to add his spouse for the coverage after enrollment was over. Hope this helps.

Loss of coverage is also a qualifying event. If he were covered before immigrating, now he won't be

thanks for the reply - I am really banking on this one, right now, but of course will not be able to find out until after he is already present and his German plan is expired. (We purposefully scheduled its cancellation, so as long as "cancellation" still counts as "loss" I am hoping that will work.)

Actually appears immigration does apply, you need to phrase it differently.

He is making a permanent change of residence and gaining legal status in the US

He's eligible to go on your health insurance now, but as always it seems they are stalling....

Whatever period of time he goes without health insurance may mean the penalty will still apply.

Short term insurances, that are typically marketed to immigrants are not compliant with the federal law. That means the penalty still applies (they consider it substandard insurance not offering proper benefits).
