Renewing Canadian Passport

I've been trying to read up on how to do this, as my passport expires in early 2016. I am living in the US on a 2 year green card, after doing a K1 visa. What's the best way to renew my passport? My brother in law is a lawyer (not a canadian citizen though), and I could drive up to Ontario if necessary.

You renew the same way you would if you are in Canada except due to the fact that you are living abroad you will have to pay more to have it shipped to the USA.

I personally do it when I'm back home since the office is local to my parents (it was still shipped back to my US address when ready). If you're not changing your name you should be able to use the simplified renewal form which requires references only (non relative). But if you are then you use the full form; a you need a guarantor who also holds a valid Canadian passport - the guarantor rules have changed and no longer need to belong to specific employment fields. You still require 2 non relative references as well.

Why does your brother-in-law being a lawyer factor into this?

My husband is going to get his Canadian passport pictures taken here and then he's going to pay like $40 in shipping costs to send the application to Canada.
