Necessity of the Social security number

My (now) wife and I applied for a social security card a few weeks ago and was told to check back in a few weeks if it hasn't arrived. It hadn't so I called and was told "the machine that sends them screwed up" or something along those lines. Her card (or app) is no longer pending in the system so apparently the application has been approved, but we simply don't have our hands on the card at this time (or know the number.) Is it necessary to have a social security number to apply for the AOS? Our forms (AOS, Work Permit, and AP) are ready to send in, all they lack is the social security number. Thanks

No, you don't need an SSN.

Hi Tomcougar,

Good luck on your immigration journey. In answer to your question, no, you don't need a SS# to apply for the AOS. Just give them all the necessary information that you already have and leave that SS# blank. From my experience, I applied for SS# and got my SS# a few weeks after I got my Green Card, as they would not give me a SS# beforehand. Also, you don't need an SS# to get married (although each State is different, so check with them first).

Besides, it is easier to apply for it after you get married, as you don't have to make an extra trip to change the work-only status and/or last names on the SS# card after you get married, as when you apply for it after, your SS# will already be unconditional status and in your wife's new last married name.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Meow and Ant!

My wife did come on a K1, we married, then applied for the SSAN. We were told at the SSO that it would take an extra week because DHS has to verify my wife's name change from maiden to married. I figure the sooner we file the AOS, the better, and if the SSO is going to have "mechanical delays", why wait to file if the number isn't necessary. Thanks again

If you do not have the SSC you can enter the Alien No, which is shown on the Visa.

I received my SSN after sending out the AOS and let them know to when I went to the fingerprinting.

The agent entered that into their system at that point.

If you both want to know the number before the card comes, if a number has already been assigned, your wife will need to go to your local SSO with her IDs and they will give her the number.
