I tried the search function...apparently it's not awake at this early hour. The instructions say to reapply for EAD six months from expiry of card IF you haven't received your GC. My question is this: On the original card does one use it until it expires OR use the new card when IT arrives which will have a new expiry date? If you receive your renewal before the expiry of the first one, do you lose that expiry date?

Did any of this make sense? It's 6:30am and I might not be fully awake just yet. :D

I'd imagine that you could technically use either card until the expiry date, but why would you want to use the old card when you have a new one that is good for a longer period of time?

I'd think the new card would have the date it was approved as the start date and one year later as the expiry date. Unless they issue the renewal to start at the date the initial card expires. Have no idea how they do it really.

Well see, that's what I was wondering. Would the new card pick up when the old one expires? You're right, we'd rather use the one that has a longer period but it would depend on when the expiry of the new one is. GRRRR....we are hoping this won't be necessary, if he gets his gc approval before March 15. Not about to hold our breath though...might suffocate.

When I applied for renewal EAD, they put the date it was approved, as the start date, even though my old EAD still had about two weeks left on it. I just started using the new one, and put the old one away. Good luck.

I feel that under the present system, filing for the card six months in advance is too soon.

USCIS.gov does state on the page which contains renewal EAD info that one should file 6 months in advance. But they have numerous other procedural memos which state 100 days.

At present the turn around time on EAD's is good. Most are issued within 90 days or very shortly after.

We intend to file 120 days prior the next time.

I think that is a good idea, 4 months should be lots of time.
