Changing SSN with restrictions with a conditional green card

Hi,

Today I had my AOS interview, based on marriage to U.S. citizen, and it was approved (not in the spot). When I receive the conditional green card can I get a new SSN card without restrictions? Or do I have to wait in two years until I get the permanent green card?

What is the process to change it?

What about the driver license?

Thanks

The only difference between the conditional GC and a 10 year GC is that your LPR status expires when the GC expires with a conditional GC--that is the main reason you file the ROC (removal of conditions) within the 90 days before the conditional GC expires, otherwise you loose your LPR status. Other than that your GC is a GC with all the rights and responsibilities afforded to someone who has a GC.

You take the GC to the local SSA office and apply for a new SSC. The restriction will be removed and the name on the SSC will match the name on the GC. Not sure what you mean about the DL unless you are asking about changing the last name on your DL. In that case show the DMV your new GC and new SSC and maybe even a Marriage Certificate--check your local DMV website for how to change your last name.

Hi thanks to both of you for reply,

Dave: Actually regarding the driver license, is because I got one that expires when my F-1 VISA expires, so I feel I need to change it to get one that does not expire soon. I did not change my name (I am a man).

It was very useful your answer regarding the SSN. I will certainly do that when I get the green card.

Thanks again

Save a little time, fill out the SS-5 before heading to the local SSA office with your GC to apply for a new restriction-fee SS card.

I'm sort of in the same boat though I'm a woman, I haven't dared to go ask if they can change my last name on it because I feel they might just revoke it because it was based on my F-1 Visa.

When can we extend it? We have to wait for Green Card? I have a feeling mine will expire before GC... It expires sometime next year.

SSNs are not revoked, and are not extended. SSN are issued to you for life.

RE: Driver's License, Dave already discussed your likely course of action. Checking the DMV (or however your particular state calls it) website is likely less intimidating and less time consuming than going there in person at this time. Each state's requirements tend to be a little different. Check out their requirements for name change, etc.; then gather your required documents and go in and git 'er done.

In our own case, we researched the DMV website beforehand, gathered our required docs. It took some perseverance before the licensing examiner would even accept my wife and stepson's Chinese Notarial Certificates of Birth. It finally came down to me saying, if two federal agencies, DHS and DOS, accepted those documents for immigration purposes, surely the State of Washington would also accept them. The licensing examiner had to check with her supervisor,... my family got their State ID cards in the mail within a week.

Good luck.
