Hi all,

I entered on a k1 visa from the UK and my wife and I married January 13th.

We have yet to take any further steps towards changing my status as we are still waiting for the marriage certificate to arrive.

I had an EAD stamp in my passport when I entered through JFK, I tried to parlay that into a social security number before the marriage but was told that it was not allowed.

Now here's my problem. I have a shot at a fantastic job, its just perfect for me and the guy is keen to hire me but I am of course in a legal limbo.

Is there anyway to get emergency work authorisation?

Is there anything I can do at all to legally be able to work for this guy.

Thanks for reading this and I appreciate any response.

Slacky, you may want to post this under the AOS (green card) discussion.

Edited to say welcome to VJ

If you have the EAD stamp you can work legally for 90 days from the date of the stamp. You should immeditately apply for AOS along with EAD so you hopefully you'll be able to continue working, if you do get hired. Go gather your paperwork!

This is a link to the USCIS site that may give you some more info on Interim EAD's. Hope it helps.

No. If your temporary EAD has run out, you have to apply for a 1-year EAD and wait about 90 days (assuming you've filed for AOS).

Slacky,

As a K1 you can get a SS card as long as you apply within 76 days of entry (there are 2 weeks remaining on your allowed stay in the USA), the SSA should accept your application and issue you a card whether or not you have the EA stamp. You need to speak with another person or another SSA office.

For an employer to put you to work you need to show them both an EAD and a SS card.
