I have a B-2 visa vistor with international driving permit (IDP) staying with me for a few months and I want this person to drive my car.

My auto insurance company refused to add this visitor to my policy stating that he/she does not have a valid US driver license.

According to CA V.C code 12801.8 (a)

"In the case of a legal, nonimmigrant driver's license applicant, the department shall issue a temporary driver's license, valid for 90 days, if the applicant has successfully completed the application and the related requirements for the issuance of a driver's license under this code"

Does he/she have to get a temp Driver License to get insured?

Anyone had similar experiences please share.

Thank you. :D

You are getting a good one! LOL dancin5hr.gif

Surely it totally depends on your insurance policy, and your insurance company will know best.

When I visit my girlfriend in NY on my B2 I always drive her car (UK licence).

Her insurance said it was fine and I was covered. Actually anyone that drives her car is covered, as the insurance is also on the car being driven by others, not just on the person named on the insurance, like it is here in the UK.

Maybe California is different?

edit// Just to expand: as long as she allows the driver to drive her car they are covered. Also they cannot live at the same address as her, ie. its a temporary thing not permanent.

Her insurance is with State Farm.

I used to drive on my UK license and US Insurance when visiting - State Farm

YMMV

My stupid insurance company (Ameriprise) actually ask for the visitor name and make me exclude this person from my policy on next renewal or they would cancel me! Their exact words!

I checked with statefarm and the want $175/month for a policy of 50/100/50 ..... I may switch to statefarm if they can match what I have at around the same premium

You are getting a good one! LOL dancin5hr.gif
