Stupid Mistake! Now need proof that I am Single...

I made a stupid mistake that might costs me my K1 visa but I am not sure it is a problem because we have not had the interview yet.

So here is the story:

In February, my fiance gave me a promise ring once we moved to Delhi so we are starting to think marriage. In April, we moved to a new apartment in New Delhi and the landlord wrote that I was the wife for cultural reasons so that I can stay in the apartment (for the police if they stop by to check) and my then boyfriend signs the lease. In your been to India as unmarried couple, you will understand how you act married so that people don't freak out like we are not even able to stay in the same hotel room in some cities without being married. So we started thinking about how if we want to stay in India, it would be easier if we were married so we start gathering the documents. That requires us to get affidavits of being single which I got from the US embassy in New Delhi and he just got a notarized letter. We start to think about our lives in Delhi and realize that we don't want to live in India so we start looking into the US.

We announce our official engagement on June 14th and begin the K1 visa process. Here comes my dumb mistake, I included the lease in my proof of relationship because I thought it looks great we lived together so we definitely know each other and I have the affidavits pledging we are single, we should be good.

Now I am worried... I am at a high risk embassy, which I didn't realize when I first started applying or I would never put the document in the proof of relationship because we had enough information anyway.

So please people give me as much advice as possible, I know I have to wait for the outcome at the interview to figure out if it is a problem but lets get me prepared for what I need to gather and possible outcomes.

Also if you can be nice, greatly appreciated. I am a ball of nerves already and realize that I am dumb so no reason to be mean but would love as much help as possible.

The CO will probably understand if you explain the reason as to why the landlord had to write that you were married in order to give you the lease due to the cultural norms surrounding unmarried couples living together.

Would you be able to get an affidavit from the landlord explaining she knew the two of you weren't married and why she wrote that you were? This would help corroborate your explanation to the CO if they questioned the lease.

That was one of my solutions too and we are able to get it.

I am just hoping they give him the chance to explain it and I explained it on post it when I sent it into the USCIS. I never got a RFE during that process so I never thought it was an issue until the other day when I saw some one got a 221g at my embassy for the suspect that they were already married. So now I am worried and wanted to hear suggestions on what I can do.

Because USCIS approved the petition with that information in it, the consular officer is not supposed to refuse the visa on the basis of information that USCIS has seen. However, provide the second affidavit from the landlord if it's necessary, and re-explain the situation if it's necessary. Any CO who's familiar with the culture should accept the explanation. Don't raise the issue yourself.

Some countries would issue a letter of 'singlehood' if requested, if you both can't be found in the registry where marriages are registered,

perhaps said registry can say that no registered marriage in your names exists.

Theres a office of vital statistics that you can get a certificate of single status here. You can check your area (which very well could be called something else) But the irony is I dont think its a federal system so you likely could be married in another state. But its expensive and comes with a shiny embossed seal that looks purty.

The good thing is, is that the CO's have an understanding of Indian customs. It seems to be a requirement to learn about the country's customs so they should know about this. And like other people have said: make sure to bring proof that the two of you are not married.

They are not expensive everywhere. In Jordan ths certificate costs the equivalent of $3 USD
