Hi, I’m trying to fill out the I-864 but I’m finding it a bit confusing. Does anyone know if there is a step by step tutorial for the I-864 application? I have tried googling it already and unable to find anything useful. I did find a couple of videos on YouTube uploaded by lawyers but after watching 1.5 hours, I realized it was just gibberish without any actual useful information.

About me and my husband we are both currently residing outside of the United States, I’m domiciled in Jordan and unemployed so wont be able to sponsor him. His cousin in the United States meets and exceeds the poverty guidelines set by USCIS, so he will be sponsoring my husband. His cousin will fill out an I-864 and get help from a lawyer so all questions asked will be regarding my I-864. Now that you have a little background hope some of you experts could help me with the bellow I-864 questions.

  1. Part 1 questions 1.a – 1.f : Which one should I select? I was thinking 1.a because I am the petitioner however his cousin will be the joint sponsor so then I though about selecting 1.e but then I didn’t know whether to choose first or second of two sponsors.
  2. part 2 questions 2.g & 2.h : I’m unable to edit them for some reason.
  3. part 3 question 1 : I’m unemployed so don’t know what to choose yes or no ?
  4. part 3 questions 3a – 27 : should I just leave these blank or should I write N/A?
  5. part 3 question 28 : not sure what to put here should I put 1? Even though im unemployed and wont be the one to actually sponsor my husband?
  6. part 5 question 1: this is actually connected to part 3 question 28 so once the previous question is answered I could answer this.
  7. Part 6: this is employment details should I just leave it blank or type n/a ?

thanks for all your help and input.

1) Yes, choose 1a because you're the petitioner. His cousin will select 1d.

2) If you can't edit, hand write it in black ink after you print it out.

3) Yes, you are sponsoring (since you are the petitioner).

4) Up to you, some people write N/A since they think they will receive a checklist for leaving blanks. I personally didn't write N/A anywhere on the form and they were accepted.

5) Yes, put 1.

6) Part 5/Number 1 will be automatically filled out.

7) Again up to you. You could put N/A or leave it blank like I did.

I just noticed some other things im a bit confused about the application

1. Part 5 question 8 : where it says household size now says 3 but were only 2 me and my husband. something must be wrong. part 5 numbers 1, 2 and 3 are set at 1 so added up they make 3.

For part 5, number 3: you need to put 0 since your spouse is the one immigrating. No need to put 1 in that field.

Yes, there is a step by step tutorial, included in the I-864 instructions. Careful study of those instructions will likely be critical to your ultimate success in the immigration process.

I think if I knew nothing about immigration and my cousin asked me to provide the I-864, then READ the affidavit for the first time, I would at least consult an attorney too. It's quite an obligation for a "cousin".

pushbrk is actually spot on. His cousin saw the application and figured it would be better to consult a lawyer rather then make an error on the application that will set us back a couple of weeks or months.

You have your answer, but your question indicates you have not carefully studied (or in this case even consulted) the I-864 instructions. Doing so, will be critical to your ultimate success. It's not that you won't still have questions after studying the instructions, but without studying them, you won't know what you don't know, or what you need to ask, you never would have thought to ask. Study those instructions.

If your taxes are a 1040 form put line 22 and yes put your name there and put n/a in the notes .

Hi Morgan i understand putting the N/A part where it says notes but still don't know what you mean by put line 22. Basically what im asking is should i put the Net income or the gross income on question 2 part 6

I have actually read the instructions carefully, I could not find the answer to the question no matter how many times i read it :(. I want to make sure i have the proper form; here is the link to the form that im reading http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-864instr.pdf. Could you confirm this is the proper one?
