Hi, I hope you get answer from other VJ members too, since I'm a noob here myself and only just filed my own I-130. But here's what I know:

For Affidavit of Support looks like you will need a joint sponsor. Your wife's friend can be one. In this case, your wife needs to file I-864 (petitioner is always the primary sponsor and always needs to file I-864 even if not making enough money). And then your wife's friend needs to file another I-864 as a joint sponsor. She will not file I-864a as that form is meant for household members, and I'm guessing your wife is neither a household member of her friend, nor her dependant.

I am not sure whether you can or can't use your wife's SSI disability as income on her I-864. Somebody else will need to answer this question.

Yes, when you send your Affidavit of Support package to NVC, this package will to include two forms I-864: one filled out and signed by your wife (who is a primary sponsor, no matter if she has income or not) and the other I-864 filled out and signed by your wife's friend who agreed to be the joint sponsor. You will also need to enclose tax documents (preferably tax transcripts that can be ordered free of charge from IRS) from both your wife and your joint sponsor.

What state do your wife and her friend live? I am asking because 48 states have the same poverty guidelines, but Alaska and Hawaii have different poverty guidelines. The income of your joint sponsor must be at least 125% of poverty guidelines. Read this: http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-864p.pdf Looks like the $34,000 a year that you wrote that your joint sponsor makes should be enough but this actually depends on how many dependents your wife's friend has (for example does your joint sponsor have any children who were included in her tax return as dependents?).

Your wife would enter her SSI income on her own affidavit. Since it isn't enough and wouldn't be counted anyway, is the reason you need a joint sponsor. Self employed sponsors state their current income as shown on line 22 of their most recently filed US federal tax return. What she's bringing in in revenue, means nothing until it appears on a tax return. Line 22 is the taxable income, after deducting legitimate business expenses. Make sure that number will qualify the sponsor based on their own household size plus you, the intending immigrant, before bothering to complete any form.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
