Hi Group Members

Plz could u kindly help me in my queries for my following scenario:

I am a Green card(conditional) holder in New York and want to invite my mom(living with my retired dad and student siblings) from Pakistan to stay with me during and after my pregnancy, and also to visit US. I need moral support, and want to share my first baby's joy with her, as Im v close to her. I dont need her to baby-sit or do house chores. I have maid coming for it already, and can arrange her to help me in baby-sitting as well. Also, I just started working v recently(professional job), and my husband works full time too. Following are my queries and concerns plz, if anyone can kindly advise me:

1- What should be the reason to apply for Visitor Visa? (Mom applying first time for US, has visited Europe in past 5 years, no one else in family visited US before other than me). Should the reason on form DS-160 be: "Tourism AND meeting Family"?

My concern: During Visa interview, if officer specifically asks: "Is your daughter pregnant?", and my mother saying yes; wouldn't this contradict the above purpose in DS-160 of Tourism and Family meet-up?

May be my mom can add herself that she is going to meet family n welcome baby plus tourism before and after delivery. She may say explicitly that the officer should not take her purpose as baby-sitting, as her daughter(me) already has maid's arrangement for it. Will such self-explanation be a good approach?

My sole concern is: If she writes Tourism and family meet-up as purpose, and then also tells upon officer's inquiry that I'm pregnant, will this not be considered hiding a fact?or incomplete information/ contradiction to purpose written on DS-160? (We dont want to write purpose as Pregnancy as this would suggest baby-sitting work, which is not the case).

2- My mom is a house-wife, never worked, has no bank account, plus my father's earnings are also not consistent sufficient for proving funds. Hence, shall my husband sponsor her or I should sponsor myself?(I just started working 1 month ago, so I never filed tax returns in US yet, neither have past months bank statements; but my husband has solid financial background).

3- Although mom cannot sponsor herself, still should she take along with herself house documents which my father owns? Utility Bills? (to show economic ties to home country?)

4- For social ties, what can she take along as proof? Family tree certificate from NADRA, siblings university enrollment letter, father's passport, siblings id's, family photographs. Are these enough to prove social/family ties?

Still my main concern remains as the purpose of her trip to US, in case of officer asking pregnancy question explicitly.

Kindly advise and help. Thanks!

Speaking from experiences from my family members in NYC...whose situation is same as yours. This is what they did.

Write a letter explaining that she is pregnant ( including in the letter because of the pregnancy she needs assistance home and would prefer to have her mom with her and explain that her mom is the best person to assist her in so many ways.....) have the letter notarized.

Provide doctor's note along with ultra sound.

Because both husband and wife file taxes they used taxes assessment, joint bank account, job letter from both .

Maybe you have a better chance at doing it that way......however keep in mind requirements are different from country to country (this is done for Guyana)

And yes they were approved...mom got 10 yrs ...also in Guyana 85% women are housewives with no job, income, seperate bank account .

Stick with 'Family Visit' or 'Visiting daughter and son in law'. Cover the pregnancy during the interview only if ask and make sure to mention it is the desire of you and her to be with when your first baby will be born.

Your husband is a US citizen and if he provide an affidavit beside I-134 in which he mention that he is inviting his mother in law to live with him and her daughter and will be fully responsible for to make sure she could return back to Pakistan before her visa entry expire so she can go to Pakistan enjoy her life with her young children and husband etc.

This is how my mom got her visa after getting a rejection. I hope this will help

mentioning pregnancy as sole reason poses a high risk as told by many ppl, becoz its for a specific purpose only. But i want my mom to not only welcome baby but also to experience USA and its charms with me insha'Allah (If Allah Wants!)

However, about funding trip, Im not sure as yet, because if my mom can show a 2, 3 month bank statement of say $5,000 in her personal account, despite being a house wife, and then apply for visa, wont it be a better idea that she is able to support herself? She definitely has savings but somehow she never puts them in bank account but always in cash. So I can ask her to keep them in account for 2, 3 months and get at least a 2-month bank statement before interview.

Everyone input plz, do u guys think its enough? Obviosly no taxes or salary statements wud be available as shes a house-wife. But she can take my father's house documents where she lives with family(docs in my fathers name).

Yes I see that using pregnancy as sole purpose would be a high risk as many said and that's why i said the requirement are different from country to country.I was only sharing the experiences which is same as yours.

In terms of what was used to show she will return back...... again might be different for your country.

Joint bank account ( which had 3 million Guyana dollars = to $15,000.00 US) , married certificate, ownership of house and land but it was in her husband name, all was took into consideration that she is a housewife and only her husband works.

I think this account will still be consider a new account and even with two months bank statement, her self supporting the trip may cause visa denial. If you dad happened to have an old bank account with some history of transaction may help but depositing US5000.00 within a month or two before the interview is a red flag and be a problem.

It would be much better if you provide a letter from you HR which mentions your employment, salary and benefits and enclosed your US bank statement even if it has just few thousand dollars. Keep in mind mind you and your husband both work so you can easily support your mom during her stay.

They can apply & may get approved on their own merits,

honest answers to all questions would be needed..now only

YOU & your parents know if THEY can afford a vacation along

with a school aged child while school is in session.

There are however no harm in them applying & documents or

letters from you is not needed for them to apply

It seems to me the best social ties she can show is that she is leaving her husband behind and so has a very good reason to return. I would gather strong evidence regarding this. about sponsoring her financially, your name is on your husband's tax returns... as far as taxes are concerned you're one entity. I'm just assuming he didn't file married filing separately, as there would be no good reason to. GL!

oh and about the pregnancy thing, I would definitely mention it, in fact, write an invitation letter to her, sign it stating that you want her to be by your side for the birth of your child.

hey thanks a bunch! u r right, I shd keep things straight n simple. however as i just came to US few months ago so my husband filed taxes without me last year. so my name is not on taxes as yet!

If I just submit my salary stubs, HR letter of employment of permanent job and bank statement of say 5 or 6 thousand dollars, does ir seem enough as tax returns are not applicable to me yet until the year end and so?

About mentioning pregnancy in invitation letter, I can do that but on form Ds-160 filled by my mother, she would mention family meet up n tourism. Are these 2 statements from my letter and the form contradictory?

u r right about it! my husband told me same! He said it sounds fishy. so now below is my scenario as almost final if u guys also think it sounds good. Plz analyze and let me know of ur thoughts:

1- Purpose of visit on form DS-160 by my mom: Visiting family n tourism

2- Invitation letter from my side mentioning my emotional need to see my mom during child birth n have her with me in welcoming my first baby plus tourism of US to share my US experience with her!

3- Financial funding by myself: My Employment letter, 3,4 pay stubs, bank statement with like 5 or 6 thousand dollars.

4- Mom providing social ties proof as my father and my siblings documents, family tree official document, family photos PLUS my mom's voluntary participation in a local NGO for women n children welfare ( on NGO letterhead, mentioning my mom as active part of mabagement/ Secretary of the NGO); but its all voluntary work. Not income based! So is it a good social tie?

5- As I shall be sponsoring mom so she doesnt need to take along any documents of my fathers or her financial standing. Is that alright?

plz shed some light on above points. thx!

How does the I 134 achieve that?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

your financial situation is not going to be assessed during the interview...an I-134 is not enforceable, nor required for tourist visa applicants....

your statement that a maid will be hired is only a statement, and might not be believed.

When asked, 'how many grandchildren do you have in the US?' or 'does your daughter have children or is she expecting?' might be questions posed to her...as well as...'where does your daughter work?'...

Yes, all of the above will work. Please make sure to send I-134 as well.

I 134 is meaningless.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
