Receipt number "not recognized by automated" USCIS system - is that unusual?

Filed: IR-5 Timeline

It's been close to 5 months since we filed our petition, which was routed to Nebraska service center.

When I try to check the status of the petition by phone, I get a message that "the automated system doesn't recognize this receipt number and therefore cannot check the status".

I called a live representative, and she was able to confirm that the receipt number is correct, and that the petition is being reviewed. Basically, she read the same message I get online. ("On May ... we received your Form I-130, blah-blah-blah...")

But I wonder, why can't the automated phone system see this very same receipt number? Isn't it strange? Has anybody ever had the same problem?
