people milking the welfare/food stamps/whatever system and live their whole lives like that. will never understand how someone can refuse to work and choose to live poorly and raise their kids like that as well.

becasue if they start to make even the smallest of income, their welfare gets taken away and they'll have to work harder.

EXCUSE ME, they are not living poorly!! they are actually better off than me. ( I know a couple families) and it infuriates me because the parents ARE ABLE to work, they just choose not to, while I bust my butt off working 3 jobs just to make ends meet.. because i'm "TOO RICH" to be eligible for welfare.

Yes like the push for 15 minimum wage...that will bring people out of government assistance forcing them to use their own money for things essentially leaving them where they were. Far too much waste in government assistance, but i conceed there are those with real needs for it.

I'm not saying that people who doesn't need it get it taken away, but I would really want government assistance to people who ARE NOT able to provide for themselves. Not just azy people not wanting to get a job.

i've experienced only drinking water and coffee for days at a time since i'd rather buy formula for my baby which was bout $10 for a small can.

I was just responding and adding. I didn't mean anything directly aimed at you.

I also didn't realize all my comments are in replies to yours. I just agree with alot of what you're saying.

Wow this thread is devolving a bit. Lets keep it non political and to cultural / societal differences that weren't applicable/prevalent at native areas before immigrating. I dont see me being able to travel anymore anytime soon so its fun to learn about everyones backgrounds ....etc

Cause certainly other approaches and ways of doing things can be better.

Its more about the curious things....such as I can see how if you didnt grow up w/ the way sales tax is applied it could be annoying due to 'change'. I got over it after growing up here I guess, its still annoying but hey oh well. Personally if you charge it, out of sight, out of mind :)

Interested in how other places work differently ...etc.

Funny how everything ends up turning to food.

Not sure about spaghetti, why would you need it everywhere? Its literally 3 components. They have plenty of fast italian places, and you cant expect a place to carry everything and deliver prompt service and quality service and serving a bunch of variant dishes.

In the Philipppines,

If you go to McDonalds, the price says P100, you pay P100. so, it means, if the sales tax is 10%, then the burger is really just P90, and the tax is P10.

McDOnald's in the PH offer chicken and spaghetti, I stil don't get why the only place i can get spaghetti is to go to an italian place..

No worries, it happens. Not directed at anyone in particular either. I just skimmed the updates dont fret!

We're all in this stuff together and its easy to just blurt out stuff that pops in our heads.

:joy: For all the crazy annoying stuff Im sure theres millions of stuff everyones grateful for. Just trying to keep on pointe tis all. Tis all about learning about things and stretching your circle a bit. Why we're all here.

I never heard of long life milk let alone the lack of it. I never appreciated peoples take that never came from sales tax as applied here how it would be perceived by newcomers so those are all things that are interesting / educational tis all.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get carried away.

It's annoying that a 15 minute car drive becomes a 3 hour long bus ride.

Texas has massive roads w/ massive lanes and frontage roads, it hard to think how much bigger the interstates could get there! ;) But like I said, go to smaller towns or abroad and I think you'll have a different level of appreciation for it...but yeah traffic sucks.

Is it just me or is the inline spell check on VJ really really slow?

No one has yet mentioned that it's deep, immediate trouble to offer a U.S. policeman a bribe in exchange for leaving you alone or forgetting an infraction. Bribes might be routine in other countries. Comments?

obsessed with the weather - there is always a forecast on.

Mrs. T-B. mentioned this right away: We gringos need to have the forecast sliced and diced and microanalyzed. In Ecuador, you open the door and stick your hand out, and if your hand stays dry, that means that it isn't raining, and that's your weather report.

To this day, Mrs. T-B. typically walks right by the weatherman's report on the television, looks blankly at it, and asks me, "Is it going to rain tomorrow?" She's still also struggling with distances, such as worrying about hurricanes in the open Atlantic Ocean.

Speaking of distances, she still tends to ask how many minutes a drive will take, rather than how many miles. I have to give her a range of time, which depends on weather, traffic, and the potential presence of traffic cops. (In Texas, 60 miles per hour is the speed at which we go through a car wash.*)

i know welfare gives them more money than some people get for actually working but:

1. it still looks like they are living poorly in my eyes. coming from a different financial background i guess.

2. i have a feeling that people who never worked a day in their lives dont really know how to get their priorities right. living from one payment to another, not being able to save money for anything. so yes they will have money to buy basic food on a regular basis but that is all they will ever have.

I know A LOT of working people are upset about it, but think where you will be in 5 years compared to where they will be in 5 years. (ill take a guess and say that you will have a career and a house while they will still be living off of mac n cheese and cans of beans)

and obviously I'm referring to people who don't work because they choose to.

I understand that some people are unable to work for one reason or another and that system prevents them from starving to death but the problem begins when healthy people who are able to work get so used to living off welfares that they don't even attempt to do anything to improve their lives.

Depends on where you live I suppose. i agree that Chicago has some unpredictable weather to which I posit perhaps Mrs TB would counter, so why bother....of which I wouldn't really argue. Lol. Weather by me can fluctuate quite a bit as well, temperature wise. Dallas is my layover of choice vs Chicago for certain.

I know a bunch of people that will just stare at the radar like they looking at a magic 8 ball. its just rain. Chillax. But I will agree when I moved to this area people drive way way worse in a teeny rain than ice / snow which boggles my freaking mind.

i think a lot of people ask how 'long in (time)' it takes to get somewhere but typically thats mentioned in reference to traffic but also in general. a 60 mph car warsh...that sounds perfect for me! I bet here you can cover a lot lot more distance in time vs Ecu.

Mrs. T-B. mentioned this right away: We gringos need to have the forecast sliced and diced and microanalyzed. In Ecuador, you open the door and stick your hand out, and if your hand stays dry, that means that it isn't raining, and that's your weather report.

Coffee!! It's so weak over here! These days I roast my own beans because I have given up! And if I ever treat myself to a latte at the neighborhood coffee hut they just give me a strange look when I ask for 8 extra shots! Coffee should be strong enough to burn through the cup if you don't drink it fast enough!
