Hello Everyone,

For those of you who have already had your consulate interviews, hopefully you can advise.

My husband doesn't speak English, only Italian. I know the people at the American Consulate in Italy speak Italian as well. However, I wonder if this will be a possible obstacle in getting a visa.

Should not be a problem. When I went for my interview I met a girl who came for a K-1 visa and she did not speak English at all. She got the K-1 without a problem.

Good luck to your husband. I'm assuming he will be learning English (ESL courses?) once he moves to the States?

I'm assuming you speak Italian as well, right? If you didn't, then that is the biggest problem I would forsee them having. But since I'm sure you do, then maybe you could just enter him in some English lessons that show the embassy some attempt at him learning the language so they don't create any false fears as to him not being able to hold a job, etc. when here in the US.

I haven't had to deal with this though so I hope someone with some real experience in this gets back to you.

A person requesting a visa doesn't need to speak English unless his/her spouse doesn't speak their native language. Each embassy should at least have translators on hand just in case any problems arise. I've never heard of a foreign embassy not having people there who speak the native language.

Shouldn't be a problem at all I've seen American Consular Officer interviewing people in Indonesian language in Jakarta.... I was pretty impressed...hahaha.....

Don't worry about it! My fiance doesn't speak English at all and we're not worried - he is by far the only one.

I speak fluent Portuguese and that is all that matters - that we can communicate.

I echo the reply of some above. The issue is NOT the embassy....they can handle the native language. The issue is more likely to be the couple...can you communicate with each other? Be prepared for such a question.
