Medical and interview in the US, possible?

Hi,

I am the alien fiance and my preferred plan to get through this way too long K-1 visa process would be to stay with my fiancee in the US with tourist visa as long as possible.

My US embassy will be Amsterdam but I would like to avoid flying back and forth for the medical check and the interview. Is it possible to make a change in a pending K-1 so everything what anyway should be done in the foreign US embassy would be done in the US?

Thanks,

Peter

Nope, for people who already are in the US, they just adjust status. You'll have to do your medical and interview back home. You can also try and schedule your medical as close to the interview date as possible so this way, you'd only have to fly back once.

As stated: for a K-1, no.

Welcome to the forum.

The changes to the K1 Visa programs that you inquire about are not available to you. The interview is done by a US State Dept. (DOS) consular official at a US embassy/consulate on foreign soil. The medical examination is done by a panel physician authorized by the interviewing US embassy/consulate. There are no US embassies or consulates in the US. Check out this (DOS) link for an overview of the K1 visa program: http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/immigrate/family/fiance-k-1.html

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Hmm, too bad. It's like they want couples to be separated for a long time. Anyways thanks for the answers!

If it were possible to do everything from the US there wouldn't be a need for a visa... If you're in the states you adjust status.

The waiting time for a K1 seems pretty short now anyway so you'll be fine.

Hmm. You may stay in the US with other non-immigrant visa for example tourist visa. Doing the medical exam and the interview of the K-1 process in the US makes sense to me and then indeed just adjust status. But it is not me who writes the rules :)

Regarding waiting time, what do you mean by short? Isn't it about 6-8 months at an average? Because that is waaay to long for me.

It can take up to 6 to 8 months, but not always. A lot of times the wait time is much shorter than that. For us, it was a little over 3 months from mailing the petition to when my wife arrived in the US.

That is fantastic news! It gives us some hope.
