Travelling to US with New Passport but ESTA in old Passport

Hey everyone,

I tried the search function for this and oddly enough I couldn't find quite the exact same question already answered so here goes!

Jon has a new passport because his old one was going to expire in 2016 so he went ahead and got it now. The question is that his old ESTA, which is still valid, is linked to his old passport. Will he have to renew his ESTA with his new passport or is he able to bring his old passport with him with the valid ESTA in it with him and travel that way? (He is bringing his old one with him anyway so I can make copies of it since it has all the old visits stamped in it)

I figured the ESTA would just transfer over to his new one since it's still valid, but I wanted to be sure before he ends up having a hold up in the airport for his next visit soon.

He needs to have an approved ESTA before travelling to the US. If his passport has changed, he needs to apply for a new ESTA. The ESTA doesn't update automatically or move between passports. So before he goes, he needs to get a new ESTA with his new passport details.

Thanks so much Mallafri! I appreciate the prompt response. The FAQ on the travel.gov website didn't include this question which I thought was odd!

I will definitely let him know to get a new one before his visit!!!

Q: Can a VWP traveler with more than one passport travel to the United States on the passport that was not used when applying for an ESTA?

A: No. Each VWP traveler must have an approved ESTA for the passport he or she plans to use for travel to the United States. If travelers acquire a new passport, they must submit a new ESTA application for their new passport.

Q: How long is a travel authorization via ESTA valid?
A: ...A new travel authorization is required if: (1) the traveler is issued a new passport.

I must have been on the wrong .gov website for it. So many .gov pages for things it's insane! They really need to consolidate and make it easier to navigate... not to mention easier to read on certain pages. Some info on the various websites make no sense whatsoever!

Jon plans to submit a new ESTA application tomorrow! Thanks again you guys :thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:
