Hello...

I am making the packet up for Steves AOS and found that they ask for

"A certified copy of your marriage certificate" Can i make a photocopy? or do i have to go apply for a certified copy at vitals?

you will need a certified copy so you cant copy it yourselfe.

Usually you can get one at city hall.

From what I understand, you can send in an exact copy of a certified copy of the marriage certificate and just take the original to the interview with you when and if you go. Boy was I surprised to find out that the certificate that was signed all nicely (though cheap looking and printed off a dot matrix printer!) was not the certified copy they wanted. No - the certified copy cost us about $10 I think.

Yea, when we got married and got our marriage certificate at the city hall, I asked them for a bunch of certified copies, you never know what you will need them for...;-)

They were about $3 each, so no big deal.

Knowing that we would need extra marriage certificates (for immigration, name change etc) we got 3 copies at the same time as getting the original. They are all identical. I'm not even sure which was the original anymore.

ohhhhhhhhh I'm not answering this question anymore...last time when I said I sent a certified copy because I like to over do everything, a VJ member whose identify I do not wish to reveal... completly lost it..saying only a copy was needed.sooo....do what you want, not what I say.

Submit a photocopy of the certified copy (if you only have one copy), and bring the actual certified copy to the interview. If you have several copies of the certified copy, it won't hurt to send one of those in.

does anyone know whats the exact procedure for full name change?

i want to keep my first name, want my husband's name as my middle name and his last name as my last name.

has anyone done that? do we have to file a petition or something for that?

To change your legal name in this country, generally you want your SS card changed. It's pretty hard to go into a job and say "this is my name" if the SS card is different. So, I know that you can change it to [your first name, your middle name, husbands last name] or [your first name, your maiden name, your husband's last name]. As far as taking his (first?) name as your middle name, sounds like you'll need a court order. As always, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
