Common core is a standardized education. Allegedly designed to keep all kids on par with each other. By standardizing instruction, format, and testing.

What it really is, is social correctness, designed to keep the lower scoring kids on par by bringing down the brighter kids.

Google common core.

Sounds like you should just fork out the money for private school if it bothers you so much.

Or move to Minnesota. :P

Private schools don't utilize common core?

MN doesn't utilize common core?

The testing might be common core aligned, but the curriculum isn't really. That article claimed that New York did poorly in the new exams too compared to the old ones because the standards changed. That isn't too surprising.

All I know is what I've experienced in CT vs. here and that is that common core reading left my daughter behind and the school didn't care. As part of our school's reading well by 3rd grade, she is more than on track and doesn't break down in tears at school because she can't meet the ridiculous reading benchmarks that came along with common core.

Common core doesn't just hurt the high performers.

yeah man....I see that MN has adopted at least a part of common core.

But I think the fact that reading scores dropped, is not the lower score kids are reading poorer.

It's the smarter kids reading poorer. Bringing down the avg.

All the private schools here are common core. And they're under-funded as well.

I'm not worried about my kids not reading well, or unable to excel in math.

My biggest objection is....

The hard working kids are being punished for their, well, their hard work....

This clown in city hall was complaining that Bronx Science is 80% asian, and that it's not fair.

well, HELLO! Earth to DiClownsio.......

It's called PARENTS THAT GIVE A !

Here's another one of this clown's ideas that failed.

I can walk in and say my name is "Barrack Obama" and they'll give me an ID.

The only thing that it succeeded in doing, is bring to attention just how many illegal immigrants there are.

So during lunch today, my friend was showing me some common core ####### on his phone. It's stupid. Very very very stupid. IMHO for the last 100-200 years we've popped out some of the most amazing minds in both mathematics and physics... Even chemists too... And all of that was taught on an older type of math. The kind my mother learned, the kind I learned, probably the kind Steve learned as well. It made sense and used math principles. Now they want to change everything. With such a drastic change it's hard for parents to help their children learn. You're taking away that home front help. You'd have to teach the parents to do it in a whole new manner so they can even attempt to help their children! My friend and I had to look up some definitions for terms they were using because we hadn't a clue. For instance: instead of saying "cite your sources" it was "include your textual evidence." What the heck was wrong with "cite your source" and teaching kids how to do so???

I was also ranting today because we were doing toy planograms and had to change the backer paper to a "gender neutral" backer. I see why we're doing it, but at the same time, the toys are still pink and purple. Or blue and red. The toys themselves are still focused towards a boy or girl because stereotypically speaking, those genders tend to go towards those toys. But who cares if a girl plays with tractors and trucks and a boy plays with dolls and dress up? Who is making the big deal about these toys being marketed towards a gender? How does me changing a pink backer paper to a wood grain backer paper change who the toy is marketed to in the first place? And again, who cares what gender the toy is marketed to? It baffles me that there are people who think this is a big enough deal to raise a stink over in EITHER direction. When does the politically correct ####### stop and common sense take over? I did it, because a) it's my job and b) maybe me changing this stupid backer paper will help the children teach their children not to worry about stupid things like which toy they're playing with and if it was supposed to be a girl or boy toy. But it's dumb and I don't understand people sometimes at all.

BTW my friend is one of those people who thinks everything should just be marketed towards kids not boys or girls. And I agree, but I also can see past the marketing and teach my child to do the same. I'm unsure why others can't also do that.

For the answers about marketing, you'd have to ask a marketing expert. But I see some logic behind it.

Like Air Supply targets a gay listener

Like Tarklar targets cheap people....

You ever walk into a Lowe's or HD lately? Target is the same way. The music they play. Targets the generation with all the money, and this same generation are home owners too.

Marketing research. Didn't you wanna go back to school for business?
