Hi Maria, sorry for the wrong saying of your name..you have raised a very important point. but all in all, I think the u.s govt must rewrite its immigration laws and furthermore make the system strict, fair and more reliable

No worries, I'm used to it by now :)

I agree with strict and reliable. Fair... Depends on how you see it. A lot of people forget that coming to the US is a privilege not a right. People seem to think they're entitled to coming here just because their married or engaged to a USC.

If fair means everyone should be treated the same way with the same chances of approval or denial then yes absolutely. As it is now some people from some countries just have to show up to the interview and they're approved. For example: have anyone here seen anyone from Scandinavia denied? That is one of the reasons why I almost feel bad about even giving my opinion in this thread because it feels like I shouldn't even say anything... But I do believe that they show be a bit harsher on countries with high fraud but as it is now that has spiraled out of control because they don't seem to be able to differentiate the good people from the bad. I can totally understand denying a couple who just met (no matter how in love they are) but a couple who has been together for years? How is that not true love?

I told them about my job, my responsibility in my office, I told them about how that I was running for a govt position in my country and that the vetting was very near....the c.o just rubbished all aside and told me to get my girlfriend do a k1 for me..

Did you bring proof of this or did you just tell them? Telling them is not proof, they want hard evidence.

well, seems like you're a consular officer in disguise. lol.. I wish you were here in Ghana to see what goes on in the embassy room. I once applied for a non immigrant visa last year to go see my girlfriend last year. I was only asked 2 questions and was denied...all other people in the line as me were all denied...this consular officer who interviewed us was busily chatting with her co worker and not even looking at our faces or docs we have presented... if u are a consular officer pls say so and give expert advice to couples who's life's are falling apart

LOL

I bet they saw your attitude from across the room. Sort of like right here.

We, USC's, occasionally do report consular officers when they are rude to us OR to our SO's or when they step over the line. My own wife was summarily denied a visitor's visa. I was there. The officer called me over for good measure and explained NO WAY with our situation (we were already married) she was gonna get one and advised us to file and wait in line for the immigration stuff to go through. After reading the rules (I had no idea back then what the rules were) I sort of figured out that the IO actually was doing her job, without prejudice.

Ghana is a high fraud country. That's a fact. Unfortunately when there are high incidences of fraud from a location everyone there gets extra scrutiny. So unless the CO did something over the line or illegal, reporting him/her for applying this extra scrutiny is probably only going to get him/her a checkmark on his/her personnel file and probably an upgrade assignment to a shall we say more palatable location.

Which is the opposite of what you probably want.

Advice: Pretend to be humble and polite and let your SO take care of any (major) issues with them from the USC side.

the truth of the matter is, no one is entitled to America, we all are inhabitants... the only true citizens of the u.s are the family of Christopher Columbus. lol...not even the consular officer..so the descendants of Christopher Columbus should be allowed to become consular officers and see if those consular officers currently will be issued visas themselves...God bless Our countries

The sad fact is you are applying in a high fraud country. The CO that interviews is held accountable for their actions in Lagos I heard of COs being fired for letting people receive visas and later finding out they committed fraud. Since 9/11 they have taken immigration more serious. This process isnt for a weak relationship if you are not willing to fight and stay with your partner dont file for a visa. My favorite quote on Nigeria orbust timeline is something to the affect: This wont be over quickly and it wont be fun. Those are very true words. My husband was denied then reaffirmed then put on AP for a year then a month ago he was told to drop off his medical police and passport his case is just now at ready. We have been waiting almost 4years to be together. Its a process they have a job to do. Take the wait time to be sure of each other and make plans for your future dont judge your case by anyone elses because we are all different. It wont be fun but being with the one you love will be worth it. Welcome to the journey I hope you have smooth sailing

If I got a dollar each time I was called Steve I'd be pretty rich by now. I'm Maria, not Seve and definitely not Steve... ;)

You haven't been to your interview yet just an non immigration interview so I'm going to use that as an example of how they use their judgment... What did you use to prove that you weren't just going to go visit your girlfriend and never come back? They're not going to take your word from it when you answer those 2 questions, those questions are mostly used to verify the evidence you showed them that you will return.

If it would be made easier and more reliable, don't you think the scam issue would be on the rise again? I'm definitely not saying the situation right now is fair, I think it is awful that genuine couples get denied and I feel sorry for all of them. But I can also see the other side and see how hard it must be for the embassy to know who is a scammer and who is not. It could be that it's gotten to the point where they just feel that "Okay if I deny them and their genuine they will try again whereas a scammer who gets denied will just move on to the next target". I do not know if this is the case but for me that unfortunately sounds plausible.

You'd think that the consular officers would get more deception training but maybe they don't get enough or I've been watching too much tv...

You have been watching to much tv

As I have read through the comments it's easy to say hey there are scammers in Ghana, but so what there are scammers everywhere even in the U.S., but the point is the co took an oath to scrutinize each applicant which is fine as long as your relationship is bona fide, but when the co is rude for no reason, talks to you disgustingly, and won't give you a straight answer, and lies to you, a complaint that just show as maybe a blemish on there work record is nothing, to how people are being treated at this Emabssy KingJulian has every right to wonder when and if he will face such a co who may not even like a black person or the country they are sent in to work?

My husband was denied, and I asked him specifically if the CO had been rude to him. He said, no, she hadn't. Just was asking him questions matter of factly

Yes, it's unfortunate that Ghana is a high fraud country, but as other posters have said, it's the price to be paid. If your relationship is real, you will just have to buckle down and bear it out. Some things in life are easy, some are not, that's just the way it goes, what can we do?

Sorry for the outburst. Even our approvals are hell. The disrespect is real. I'm beginning to consider what frequent traveler friends of mine tell me all the time. The U.K. consulate treats Ghanaians with more respect than the US. Their process is respectful and even those that are denied feel no ill afterwards. Smh

Ummmm, please re-read your history. Native Americans were here when Christopher Columbus walked on shore.

However, that is why we say front load your petition, because the decision of approval or denial is made prior th the face to face at the window. When u submit the financial documents, they are verifying if you meet the requirements. The interview is just a formality.
