I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I thought you had to have the EAD before you can apply for SSN.

for a K-3, you do need your EAD. as I understand, a K-1 can apply before the I-94 expires.

Hi Roy,

Just a little info. Upon entry to US give a little of 2 weeks, for your fiancee name to be shown up in USCIS system. You could apply her SSN in her maiden name if you want to apply her a SSN before marriage. But if you wait after your marriage and you get your registered marriage certificate, you could apply her a SSN in her married name already.

Getting it early the disadvantage is.... but not really that difficult to do changes after.. is that you gonna change it in married name again in time of after marriage or until you got your Greencard, if you gonna let her to use your last name after marriage or she decided to use her new married name.

Advantage of having SSN in maiden or marriage name is that, your registered already and could used for the purposes of applying such things that needed an important Identification like a SSN.

But having a SSN in maiden name or married name are NO difference in her status of SSN restriction.... that she is a "Legal Alien but without Authorization to Work", since she needs to apply for an EAD or wait for her Greencard to be issued to her married name if she decided to use your last name.

Hope it helps... i don't mind to be corrected If i'm mistaken. Bcos I applied my SSN after I got my Greencard in married name already so It won't be added processing of changing name into my ID cards.

God bless!

Hi Roy. I've heard varying opinions on when to apply for the SSN. Personally, I waited until after we were married so that I would not to have to go back to request a name change. The drawback was that it was a bit of a nuisance with banking applications and such, as they seem to request the SSN for everything one does here. But it was only a minor nuisance, as the institutions were able to work around it. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!

In order only to match her married name to her I-94 and visa ... is the "marriage certificate". Since it shows that her visa is K1 with a 90 days for her to be married in US.

No sweat on such ... Identification issues .. goodluck!

Better do it in married name, so when the time you will add her to your credit card or bank account, she's already in married name. that's the only thing i didn't put my mind after my marriage. I'm not eager to work by then bcos i do used my husband creditcard - he just let me to signed his name when purchasing, I just need to show my married name , so I don't mind and i waited for my Greencard so not to be bother of alot of lazyness and come back again or waiit for more weeks for only name change for many government offices  .

good luck!
