Hi,

I would like to know if the explanation that you did not file a tax return for a certain should be handwritten? Or can it be typewritten?

Thank you!

Hello, it can be typed, as long as it is the original copy and most importantly, affix your signature. Also, dont forget the date. ☺️

Either is fine, although I haven't had access to a typewriter in decades. You can't enter the explanation in the PDF, but you can hand write on the original I-864. Just make it short, to the point, and legible. Something like "Not required to file. Income below threshold." is usually the reason a tax return isn't filed. I really can't think of another acceptable reason. That you filed an extension is really not an excuse. If you use it, make sure the return gets filed in time for the applicant to take a copy to the interview.

There is no way to enter the needed explanation directly on the form, that I'm aware of, even with the full version of Adobe. If you find a way, please let me know.

Type it on a separate paper? And attach it with the form. I didn't meant to type it on the form itself

My suggestion then, is to hand print it directly in the space on the form, where it will be immediately seen. I gave you an example of a very short, acceptable explanation. Since that's really the only acceptable explanation for not filing, it should be fine. At least it has worked every time I know it to have been used, which is more than I can keep count of.

Since you are here replying about this topic, I wanted to ask you if the explanation statements for not filing can actually be typed directly on the new form version now. Page 12, Part 11 is for additional information, so it seems like you now can add extra explanations/info for questions without having to add separate attachment sheets that could get lost or overlooked. What are your thoughts on adding the explanations for not filing taxes in that section?

I think you could hand-write 'See Page 12, Part 11' under #20 after checking the box, and then put the explanation there directly on the form. Even though it appears #20 covers the explanation/reasoning already, the instructions still ask for the statement.

Yes there is space on the last page to type extra things as needed. You can't type the explanation on the section where the questions are actually asked. The additional space on page 12 is a welcome addition to the new form, as is the automatic totaling of household size that makes it impossible to fill out the form counting the spouse twice and have the correct number in the total. Of course you had to add wrong to make that mistake before. The new form does the adding for you.

I may ask, in the last page where they asked you for additional information can you type the reason of non-filing there? or do you really have to handwrite it on the bottom page where the question is being asked? Thank you!

Nobody suggested writing on the bottom of the page where the question was asked. This question was specific to not filing a tax return or returns. The suggestion was to hand write/print in the section where the answer would be entered, not at the bottom of the page.

is it best to type it on the last page asking for additional information? and type the reason why there's no tax return.

Opinions may vary on this, but my answer has already been given in this thread. There's only one acceptable reason, and it's explanation is quite short.
