It is a long way off for us, but I am curious, when you travel together with your spouse/fiance can you go together with her/him though the immigration checkpoint at your US POE? seems like someone told me you can, which would bring the stress level way down for most couples

No. Unless you are a US citizen, you are lumped with "green card holders" and "Aliens" aka NON-US CITIZENS. *sigh* My husband had to go through the NON-US CITIZEN line with me. What a headache! In my country, we can go through the same line.

If you are the fiance that's true! :) But I was the spouse already working and living in the US so they had no questions for me. This was frustrating because we stood in line for 3.5 hours (It was around Christmas time so there were a lot of people flying) 3.5 hours for them to say "Walk through these doors behind me." :(

Glad you asked this because I was wondering the same thing; I would rather be standing next to him in the immigration line for hours than to be on the other side waiting for him to come through.

Here in NYC customs is automated machines for US citizens. When my wife entered the first time we went together to the first time entry line. we went to the customs booth together, they took her fingerprints, took her sealed packet, welcomed her to the USA and we was on our way to baggage claim in had to be about 8 minutes , we actually spent more time at baggage claim than we did at the customs desk.

Thats great, anybody know about ATL airport? actually most all are automated now, I have made a bunch of trips in the last few years, scan the passport, take a photo, then roll thru the desk. I may plan my trip back with her through NYC first since thats the case, if your standing there with the Immigrant it cuts way down on the questions they could possibly ask

let me pitch in with something you are going to like. in my case ,me and my wife(usc)stood in respective queues at the POE (ORD). the officer asked her to come get me (as they already asked her if she was travelling with someone and she told she was travelling with her husband(myself)).they processed me and my wife together in the USC queue.

If you are travelling with your spouse (USC) then yes you can go through together, I always have done, if you notice the desks are all the same

The only time someone said something was when we were asked if we were married, we have different surnames

Never been an issue

we were allowed to go together thru the US citizens line / i think this is sometimes dependent on number of people being processed and the people directly the lines in the huge airports / We came in thru JFK / very busy but the nice man directing people to lines let us go thru US lines

You complete one Customs Declaration form per family, so if you are a family you go together--husband and wife and go thru the USC and resident line. If you are travelling with your fiancé(e), then I would ask the person directing traffic if the two of you can go together. Since you are not yet a family, two Customs Declarations forms need to be completed and the CBP may separate you.
