WB pulled the plug on the Dirty Harry game I've been working on for 2 years and our company was forced to lay off most of the crew...myself included. After the initial shock, I had sensed something bad in the air. I had been with the company nearly 5 years but was ready to move on - I had stayed on long enough for the visa to be issued so this could be a blessing in disguise.

They're giving me a reasonable severance package and I should be okay for at least a month. I'm hoping that it won't be that long before I land another animation job elsewhere. I've also been waiting tables a few nights a week, so have that to fall back on.

What a funky feeling. I could say it was bad timing but actually, I'm thankful that it happened after Jinky's visa was issued.

Aw Steven, I'm sorry! The other blessing is you will have a few weeks off to spend just with Jinky and Job. I hope a new job opportunity knocks sooner than later.

Thanks, Alex. I'll feel more relaxed when I can have access to all my work at that company so that I can put together a demo reel. I was so unprepared for this.

Steven, I am sure you will hear it a lot in the next few days, but sometimes getting laid off is actually the best thing for you. I know when my position was eliminated it felt like the floor had dropped out from underneath me. But, like you I got a decent severance package and was fortunate enough to find another position in about a month. It paid more, offered better benefits, I liked my new coworkers better than the old ones, and I have been happy here for the past 5 years. All in all, when I added up the severance, vacation, and the one unemployment check that I collected, I even made money by being laid off and getting another job so quickly!

The worst part for me was the month I was unemployed. Everyone was racing off to work and I almost felt worthless sitting at home. So keep busy looking for a new job and enjoy having the time to spend with Jinky when she arrives.

Good luck!

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

 Thank you and everyone for the well wishes. I've been laughing to myself thinking about guys who get laid off but drive off every morning to go to work so not to worry their wives. I'm thinking I might do that...I don't want her to panick. :P

I'm hoping I can get on a project that is much more cartoony - I'm not a big fan of the uber-realistic games - might be cool to play but animating people like that is boring.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

 thanks for that, brother. Yeah, it wasn't really translating into much of a game. Not too many teenagers want to pretend they're a forty-something cop with a bad 70's hairdo.

Steven,

We all have times when we feel defeated and discouraged. Fight the fight and battle the battle. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I promise. (F)

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
